Nia and Melia become unlockable Heroes after completing the main story. In the Post-game, approach the quest-related events in their respective castles and watch the cutscene to have them join your team and obtain their classes.

How to Change Characters
Press L or R to Change Character Control
You can switch which character you control at any time while in battle or exploring the world. While exploring, press L or R to switch between different characters. In battle, you'll need to press ZR to open the Tactics menu then press L or R to switch which character you control on the field.
You Cannot Change Your Main Party
Because these six are the main characters of the game, they cannot be swapped out or changed with any other character at any point in the game. They will always stay in your party.
You can however customize each of your party members so they can occupy different roles on the battlefield.

How to Recruit Heroes
Meet Heroes as You Explore the World
Heroes are found all over the world of Ionos. You can recruit heroes by finding their location in-game and asking them to join your team. However, it is possible that you may need to complete certain quests or defeat them in battle before you can recruit a hero.
Swap Heroes in the Hero Selection Menu
You can choose which hero fights alongside your party by opening the Hero Selection menu. Only one hero can join your party at a time, so make sure to choose the best hero based on the foe you are about to face.
