Absence of a Sign Walkthrough and How to Photograph Celestial Phenomena

How to Unlock Absence of a Sign

Progress Through Story in Chapter 10

The Absence of a Sign side quest is unlocked after advancing through Chapter 10: Watcher of the Vale and completing the Uninvited Guests main scenario. In order to reach this part, you must complete Red XIII's trials and defeat the boss Gi Nattak. You will then return to Cosmo Canyon, where the quest unlocks.

How to Complete Absence of a Sign

1. Speak with Watchers at Planetology Assembly
2. Head to Celestial Phenomena Locations
3. Defeat Reapertails at Phenomena Locations
4. Take Pictures of Celestial Phenomena
5. Give Photos to the Skywatchers

Speak with Watchers at Planetology Assembly

After accepting the quest at the Community Noticeboard, head to the Planetology Assembly. You can get here quickly by talking to one of the guides in Cosmo Canyon and fast traveling there.

Head to Celestial Phenomena Locations

You will need to head to all three celestial phenomena and take pictures of the sky from those locations. Tips on how to reach these destinations are detailed below.

The third and final one is the trickiest to get to, since you need to start from the very bottom of the Cosmo Canyon Region, climb up a hillside, and use Gliding Ranges to float across gaps, eventually making it high enough up the canyon to be able to glide across to the Ancient Capital Tower.

Defeat Reapertails at Phenomena Locations

Before you can take photos at the celestial phenomena locations, you will need to defeat the Reapertails guarding each spot. These are strong fiends that can wipe your party if you're not careful.

The Reapertails are weak to Ice, so cast Blizzard spells in order to pressure it. Always try to block or deflect its regular attacks. Have Sedatives handy to cure Fury status, which decreases your party's defense. If the Reapertail is gearing up for Pulverize, get behind it immediately to avoid being pummeled to death.

Take Pictures of Celestial Phenomena

After you've defeated the Reapertail of the area, bring up your camera with the up directional button and take a photo, trying to copy the images in your Notes (left directional button). The photo accuracy has to be at least 80%.

Give Photos to the Skywatchers

Return to the Planetology Assembly in Cosmo Canyon and give the photos to the skywatchers, thus ending the quest.

Increase Favorability With Aerith

Completing Absence of a Sign will also increase your friendship with Aerith. This will affect the events that will occur when you visit the Gold Saucer later in the game.

Telluric Scriptures Vol. XII Dropped by Reapertails in Hard Mode

While playing in Hard Mode, defeating the Reapertails will reward you the Telluric Scriptures Vol. XII for Aerith. You can access Hard Mode after completing your first playthrough of the game in any difficulty.
