Deal damage until it activates Breather Continue to deal damage while it rests

Exploiting their elemental weakness will draw their ire. After some time passes, they will being to rest. Inflicting enough damage while they are resting will pressure them.

Save Cloud ATB Charges to Pressure and Stagger

Mastodons can only be pressured when they rest and trigger Breather. This is a small window, so save Cloud's ATB for this time to Pressure and Stagger the enemy.

Yuffie Spams Fire Attacks

Since Mastodon is weak to fire, have Yuffie use Fire Ninjutsu to exploit this weakness.

Aerith Heals as Needed

The Mastodons are very aggressive and can deal a lot of damage in a short span. Always have Aerith ready to supply heals as needed.

Magnify	・Allows you to hit multiple enemies or allies when using its linked Magic or Healing Materia. ・Best equipped on Yuffie or Aerith.
Healing	・Heal a single ally in battle. ・Best equipped on Aerith or Cloud.
HP Up	・Increase the HP of a character. ・Can be equipped to all characters.
First Strike	・Gain a small amount of ATB (large if maxed out) at the start of battle. ・Can be equipped on Yuffie or Aerith to help with early casts of Firaga at the start of battle.

Focus on Defeating One Mastodon

The Mastodons have high HP, are tough, and are very aggressive. Focus on defeating one Mastodon first to decrease disruptions and possible damage taken.

Focus Fire When They Use Breather

The only time the Mastodons can be pressured is when they are using their Breather ability. So once you see them activate this, it's time to use all your available abilities that can significantly increase stagger.

Be Aggressive To Lure Away From Sotetsu

You encounter the Mastodons during a side quest that requires you to fight with and protect an NPC. Luckily, it's very easy to draw the attention of the Mastodons and lure them away from the NPC. Deal any kind of damage to redirect their attention to you to avoid failing the quest.
