Can confirm that crippling the chest makes no different on hard. The didn't chat the Intel either so I wasted hours thinking I could avoid it...
Playing on hard mode, his Crimson Breath is always level III. Breaking his chest triggers it instantly with the only way of surviving seemingly being casting Pray or Magnifiy+Cura on everyone with 1-2 people as it reaches you.
