Upgrading Essences via Etching is only available for Flawless Essences. They can only be farmed in Severe Energy Alluviums in higher levels, so come prepared with your best team to take down the enemies and get them!
| Rarity | Essence Type |
|---|---|
| 5-star | Flawless |
| 4-star | Clean |
| 3-star | Pure |
| 2-star | Stable |
The rarity of an Essence determines the number of passives it can have. A 2-star Essence will always have one line of passive available, while a 5-star Essence can have either 2 to 3 lines of passives, with 3 being the maximum.

Afterwards, choose the Flawless Essence which will be used to Etch on their current passives.
It is highly suggested you Etch the most optimal, 3-line Flawless Essences you have that are perfect for your Operator's weapons. Their passives must match the ones your weapons have on all three slots, shown on the left side of the Weapon menu.
Etching Increases Stat Levels for Weapons
You need a different Flawless Essence as the cost to Etch, so make sure to choose the ones that have not been Etched onto, and avoid the ones you want to Etch later by locking them.

Once you've chosen an Essence to upgrade, choose which one of the 3 stats you want to etch. That stat will get an increase of said level's passive, which will make it easier to fulfill the conditions of the weapon's Boost effects.

Once you've chosen the Stat you upgrade, you can now feed it Flawless Essence. You will need a lot of Essence to increase your stat level, and there's a chance that it could fail upon upgrading.
Make sure to check on the Success Rate of the Etching attempt as it can range from Very High to Low, with the rate getting lower the stronger the upgrade is. Failing an Etching attempt loses the Flawless Essence used as cost, but it does not have any detrimental effect to the Essence being upgraded.
If you fail an Etching Attempt, you will gain 10 pieces of a special currency called Coolant. These can be used to guaranteee the success of an Etching attempt.

Etching is a process that increases the levels of passive buffs to make it easier to activate the passive buffs of your Weapon. This makes your character much stronger with added stats and effects that boost their efficiency in combat.
This is why it is very important that you equip the best possible Essence on the weapon that matches the same passives as the weapon. Ideally, you want Flawless Essences with 3 lines of buffs; the maximum possible for an Essence.

Etching Essences is only allowed to the highest rarity of Essences, called Flawless Essence.
These can be obtained and farmed in Severe Energy Alluviums, which rewards the player with Flawless Essence upon clearing.
