The best way to farm Essences is by spending Sanity in Severe Energy Alluviums.
Severe Energy Alluviums are unlocked at Exploration Level 4, available after completing the Beyond the World's Expanse I mission.

Selecting the circular icon next to the View button reveals all the possible weapons that can benefit from the Essences dropped in the Severe Energy Alluvium, in addition to all the possible stats that can appear in the Essences.

To expedite Essence farming, players can spend Sanity Usage Permits to double the drops and Sanity spent. These can be acquired from the Originium Supply and Protocol Customized tiers of the Protocol Pass.
Note that 1 Sanity Usage Permit is used for every 10 Sanity spent. This means that spending 80 Sanity in a run uses 8 permits to double the rewards.

Engraving Permits can be used to limit the stats that appear on Essences, available for purchase in Stock Redistribution using Stock Bills.
Note that Engraving Permits are region-locked. Engraving Permits purchased in the Valley IV Staple Goods can only be used in Severe Energy Alluviums found in that region.

To equip an Essence to a weapon, go to the Character menu and switch into the Weapons category. The equipped Essence can be found beside the current weapon's Potential level.

Keep in mind that the Essence's bonuses are only provided when a skill on the Essence matches a skill on the weapon.
Each weapon has a base Attack value and up to three additional skills. Essences will only provide levels if they match one or more of the weapon's skill, and will not provide bonuses to non-matching skills.
| Rank | Bonus Levels |
|---|---|
| Stable Essence (Green) | 1 |
| Clean Essence (Blue) | 1~2 |
| Pure Essence (Purple) | 1~3 |
| Flawless Essence (Gold) | 1~6 |
Above is a list of the number of extra skill levels provided by Essences of each rarity. Higher rarity Essences provide more bonus levels compared to their lower-rarity counterparts.

Flawless Essences can be etched in the Essence menu to increase the bonus levels it can add onto the weapon, up to +6.
This requires consuming other Flawless Essences for a chance to raise its level, or spending Coolant Gels to guarantee its increase.

Enemies defeated in the overworld have a low chance of dropping an Essence.
Essences obtained this way can only reach purple rarity, as gold rarity essences can only be obtained in Severe Energy Alluviums.
