AETHER is presented as having no hostility toward humans whatsoever. This is particularly noticeable when Aloy retrieves it and offers to bring it home to GAIA.
AETHER had a history of being unstable and this resulted in turbulent weather. It has since been able to stabilize. Unlike its AI contemporaries, AETHER never harbored ill will toward humans, instead focusing on scrubbing the Earth's atmosphere of toxins, moderating the climate, and establishing stable weather patterns.
When HADES was infected by the Mysterious Signal, GAIA destroyed herself to prevent it from taking over. During this period, a deranged and semi-conscious AETHER fled to a processor somewhere in the Forbidden West. Aloy obtains AETHER in the story quest The Broken Sky after she discovers it in The Memorial Grove, an ancient war museum and present Tenakth settlement.
AETHER is the subordinate function responsible for the detoxification and stabilization of the Earth's atmosphere. Seeing as the Earth is presently habitable by humans and wildlife, it's safe to say AETHER was successful with its task.
