This explains the differences between the Explorer Mode and Guided Mode features available in Horizon Forbidden West (HFW). Read on to learn more about the differences between the modes, and which one best suits your play style.

Differences between Guided and Explorer Mode

The main difference between the two modes are the icons that appear in your HUD and Map. One denotes the location of the currently selectd quest while the other indicates the suggested path to reach that quest.

Quest Pathfinding

Guided Mode
Explorer Mode

The Icon that shows you the loaction of your currently select quest. This icon appears on your HUD in Guided Mode but not in Explorer Mode.

Waypoint Pathfinding

A suggested path leading to the selected waypoint that appears on your map. The path shown is usually the easiest to traverse.

Should You Choose Guided or Explorer Mode?

Choose Explorer Mode When You Want to Add Challenge and Excitement to Your Gameplay Experience

The lack of Waypoints and suggested paths makes how you reach quests completely up to you. By choosing your own way to approach reaching a quest, you might potentially come across new enemies and items earlier than usual. As such this mode is great for not only veterans of the series, but for those who want to 'carve their own path' when exploring the world.

Choose Guided Mode if You Want to Finish Quests Quickly

Guided Mode not only shows the locaiton of the next quest, but the best route to take in order to reach it.
Because of this Guided Mode is recommended for players who often find themselves lost when exploring, but also for those who want to tackle various sideuest quickly and efficiently.
