As an AI created with the intent of terraforming Earth, GAIA developed a benevolent and caring personality. Although this development was unexpected by its creator, it was openly welcomed, as its genuine sadness over the loss of life and extinction would only improve its functions as the governing AI of the Aero Dawn Project.
Machines, as a result, of the Faro Plague, ran rampant throughout Earth consuming biomass as fuel and slowly bringing all life to extinction. To counteract this, Dr. Elisabeth Sobeck created Zero Dawn in an attempt to terraform the Earth. GAIA was created as Zero Dawn's governing AI and had control over all subfunctions associated with the terraforming process.
Although restoration of life was successful, one of Zero Dawn's subprograms, HADES became an AI as a result of The Signal and attempt to take over Zero Dawn. GAIA initiated her self-destruct sequence to prevent this takeover, killing herself in the process. This however did not destroy HADES who managed to escape Zero dawn's housing facility.
Although GAIA was destroyed before the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, it has been hinted that remnants of her programming still exist.
As the governing AI of the Zero Dawn project, GAIA has the intelligence and capability of controlling and maintaining multiple subprograms. As such GAIA's knowledge and calculating proficiency necessary to do so is immeasurably massive, as the subprograms she governs are powerful enough separately exist as their own AI.
