While its subordinate function is to be responsible for designing and building machines, HEPHAESTUS shows itself to be merciless and cruel. This was most evident when it took control of CYAN, another AI, and forced it to go against its own command to gain control of Firebreak.
When HADES was infected by the Mysterious Signal, GAIA managed to destroyed herself to prevent it from taking control. During this period HEPHAESTUS, deranged and semi-conscious, fled to the network that connects the world's Cauldron facilities.
HEPHAESTUS is only able to partially control the Cauldrons it haunts. But at one point, it attempted to create its own Cauldron for the purpose of accelerating the construction of combat machines. With the help of Aratak and Ourea, Aloy was able to stop this.
HEPHAESTUS now operates on a warped set of priorities. It is determined to protect the machines from human hunters. To accomplish this, it takes over Cauldrons to create combat machines, which it dispatches to fight the humans.
HEPHAESTUS is responsible for designing and building machines needed by other parts of the systerm to regenerate life on Earth. Due to the nature of its role, it is the largest and most powerful subordinate function.
