Complete From Whence Life Flows
To unlock Promises to Keep, you need to complete the side quest, From Whence Life Flows. This quest will have you look for survey stations across Cosmo Canyon to help out Bugenhagen with his research.
From Whence Life Flows Walkthrough
How to Complete Promises to Keep
- Talk to the Guard of the Vale.
- Track down the Gi.
- Pursue the Gi Specters.
- Beat Irasceros.
- Talk to the Gi Specters.
Talk to the Guard of the Vale
Head towards the north bridge in Cosmo Canyon and talk to the Guard of the Vale stationed there. He'll inform the party that the survey team spotted the Gi outside of town. It's up to Cloud and Red XIII to track them down!
Track Down the GI
Head to the location where the Gi was spotted. Take the elevator north of the settlement to head down to the desert area. Then head northwest to the marker on the map, where two Gi spirits surround an abandoned wheelbarrow.
Once you're near the marker, a cutscene will play. Defeat the Skeeskees the Gi Specters will possess.
Pursue the Gi Specters
The Gi Specters will then flee. Follow them to two more spots where they will possess Desert Sahagins. Beat these fiends again and chase the fleeing specters again to a clearing.
Beat Irasceros
The Gi Specters will summon Irasceros, which is a much tougher fiend than the Skeeskees and Sahagins.
Before engaging, we recommend having Aerith on your team and equip the abilities, Radiant Ward and Arcane Ward. Use the former to strengthen Aerith's basic attacks and the latter to cast Thunder, which is Irasceros's weakness, twice.
Talk to the Gi Specters
After beating Irasceros, you can then talk to the Gi Specters about Red XIII's father. Red XIII will then promise to fulfill the oath his father promised the Gi before the specters vanish.

Increase Favorability With Red XIII
Completing Promises to Keep will also increase your friendship with Red XIII. This will affect the events that will occur when you visit the Gold Saucer later in the game.

Tale of the Red Warrior Vol. XIII Dropped by Irasceros in Hard Mode
While playing in Hard Mode, defeating Irasceros will reward you the Tale of the Red Warrior Vol. XIII for Red XIII. You can access Hard Mode after completing your first playthrough of the game in any difficulty.
