Secrets of the Ayleids is located in the Umbacano Manor in The Imperial City, Plaza District. The quest is unlocked after completing Nothing You Can Possess.

Talk to Umbacano

TES IV Oblivion Talk to Umbacano

After completing Nothing You Can Possess, talk to Umbacano at his Manor in the Imperial City, Plaza District. He’ll give you 1,000 Gold and ask you to retrieve the Crown of the Ayleids.

Speak with Herminia

TES IV Oblivion Speak with Herminia

Leave the Manor and head to Green Emperor Way in the Imperial City. Find and speak with Herminia Cinna, who is roaming around the cemetery. She’ll tell you of another crown and give you the Royal Tomb Key to Lindai.

Obtain the Crown of the Ayleids

With two crowns in play, you can either steal the Ayleid Crown of Nenalata from Herminia’s House or retrieve the Ayleid Crown of Lindai from the ruins. The crown you give Umbacano will determine the quest’s ending.

To get the Crown of Nenalata, you'll need to steal it from Herminia Cinna's House in the southeast of the Elven Gardens District. The front door has an Average lock, so you may need to lockpick the door.

TES IV Oblivion Private Quarters Lock
Once inside, head upstairs to Herminia Cinna's Private Quarters. You'll need to lockpick the door's lock to enter.

On the table opposite of the bed, interact with the Ayleid Cask and lockpick the Hard lock. Take the Ayleid Crown of Nenalata from inside.

Retrieve the Crown of Lindai

# Step-by-step Walkthrough

TES IV Oblivion Lindai Location
To get the Crown of Lindai, you'll need to retrieve it from Lindai. You can fast travel to Weynon Priory and make your way northeast until you find the ruins. Head downstairs to enter Lindai.

TES IV Oblivion Lindai Traps
Inside, go downstairs and turn right to enter a large hall. Be prepared for enemies and traps along the way!

TES IV Oblivion Floor Trap
Head upstairs to the east and you'll reach another hall with a gate ahead. Avoid stepping on the floor with holes, as doing so will drop you onto a spike trap. Pass through the gate and continue into the Lindai Inner Tombs.

Move forward and open the stone door using the Royal Tomb Key. In the next area, defeat the enemies before interacting with the Ayleid Cask in the center to take the Ayleid Crown of Lindai.

Give the Crown to Umbacano

TES IV Oblivion Return to Umbacano

Once you have the Crown of the Ayleids, return to Umbacano and give him the crown. As mentioned, the crown which you give Umbacano will affect how the quest will turn out, so this is where you make your game-changing decision but will see its affects later in the quest.

Options Outcomes
Give the Crown of Nenalata Umbacano transforms into the King of Nenalata and attacks you, along with his minions.
Give the Crown of Lindai Umbacano dies from electrocution, then you are ambushed by enemies.

Escort Umbacano Nenalata

# Step-by-step Walkthrough

TES IV Oblivion Nenalata Location
Regardless of which crown you gave him, your next objective is to escort Umbacano to Nenalata, located east of Bravil across Niben Bay. He’ll be waiting outside the ruins with his bodyguard, Claude Maric.

You can choose to lead the way or have him wait. We recommend to let him wait, because if he dies during the journey, the quest ends prematurely.

TES IV Oblivion Clear Path Nenalata
Nenalata has three levels. Proceed through the ruins, dealing with enemies along the way and clearing a safe path for Umbacano.

TES IV Oblivion Secret Passage
Once you reach Sel Aran Arpena, the third level, lead Umbacano down the hall to the east. He’ll place a carving to open a secret passage to the throne room.

Watch Umbacano Wear the Crown

With the throne room open, Umbacano will sit on the throne and wear the crown. From this point, what happens next depends on which crown you gave him earlier.

Give the Crown of Nenalata

TES IV Oblivion King of Nenalata

If you gave the Crown of Nenalata to Umbacano, into the King of Nenalata and attack you, along with his minions to ambush you. Defeat him and clear the throne room. You can loot his body to retrieve the Crown of Nenalata, and Claude’s body if he died during the battle.

Give the Crown of Lindai

TES IV Oblivion Umbacano Dies

If you gave the Crown of Nenalata to Umbacano, he will be electrocuted and killed instantly. Enemies will ambush you shortly after. Defeat them and clear the throne room. You can loot his body for the Crown of Lindai, and Claude’s body if he died during the battle.

Escape Nenalata

# Step-by-step Walkthrough

TES IV Oblivion Escape Throne Room
Use the passage to the left of the throne to escape. Head upstairs and return to the main chamber of Nenalata.

TES IV Oblivion Nibenay Valley
Press the block next to the gate to open it, then go upstairs to the stone door leading to the Nibenay Valley. Once outside, the quest will be complete.

Secrets of the Ayleids Rewards

1,000 Gold

At the start of the quest, Umbacano will give you 1,000 Gold before briefing you with the quest.

Crown of the Ayleids

You can keep whichever Crown of the Ayleids crown you gave to Umbacano by looting his body at the end of the quest. It’s also possible to obtain the other crown afterward. For instance, if you retrieved the Crown of Lindai during the quest, you can later break into Herminia Cinna’s House to steal the Crown of Nenalata.
