Kill an Innocent NPC
The first step to joining the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion is to kill an innocent or non-hostile NPC. Bandits (or any other regular enemy) will not count as a valid kill. You'll know your kill counted if you get the message, "Your killing has been observed by forces unkown...", after killing the NPC.
When choosing your victim, be careful not to kill characters that are tied to questlines. Also, avoid trying to kill in areas with guards around since you will probably get arrested for your efforts.
For quick, early game victims, we recommend killing the residents of the Skooma Den in Bravil. If you manage to lockpick your way into the location, it'll be easy pickings inside.
Sleep to Trigger A Knife in the Dark
After you see the message confirming your kill, look for a bed or bedroll then go to sleep. A representative of the Dark Brotherhood named Lucien Lachance should show up, offering you a place in their group via the recruitment quest, A Knife in the Dark. Exhaust his dialogue to get more details about the initiation test.
Kill Rufio at the Inn of Ill Omen
The target you'll need to kill is an NPC named Rufio. You'll find him at the Inn of Ill Omen - a structure located by the Green Road (just to north of Bravil and east of Skingrad).

| 1 |  Open your map via the quest window, there you will see the location of the Inn of Ill Omen. It is to the north of Bravil and east of Skingrad. |
| 2 |  Follow the path to the Green Road until you see a message that you have discovered the Inn of Ill Omen. Enter the inn. |
| 3 |  Once you're inside the inn, look for a trap door on the first floor that leads to the private quarters, and go down. |
| 4 |  In the basement, go straight and ignore the first door. Open the second door to find Rufio sleeping inside. Kill him to progress the quest. |
Sleep Again to Complete the Trial
Once Rufio is dead, head over to a vacant bed or bedroll and sleep. Lucien Lachance will show up afterwards, telling you that you are now a member of the Dark Brotherhood.
