The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion - Character Creation Guide

You must create and customize your character both at the beginning and throughout the starting area of the game in The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered. Learn the steps of Oblivion Remastered's character creation and if you can change your character later on!

Character Creation Guide

2 Customize Your Appearance

4 Pick or Create Your Class

There are 10 races to choose from in character creation, each granting a unique combination of benefits that impact your potential builds as you play. Each race has its own set of base Attributes and Skills, along with unique Racial Powers that complement certain classes, builds, and playstyles in Oblivion.

However, despite how races are presented, you're still free to play however you want. If you really want to play as a Nord spellcaster, then have at it. You'll just have less bonuses than someone who started a spellcaster playthrough as a High Elf or Dark Elf.

Best Race to Play

Race Active and Passive Powers Matter More than Stats

If you aren't bothered by your character's looks, then you're better off checking out the unique powers of each race since these have a more lasting impact than the base Attribute and Skill stats. Remember, these are permanent while attributes and skills can be improved as you level up.

Abilities like the Breton’s 50% Magic Resistance passive, or the Redguard’s Adrenaline Rush and Orc’s Berserk active abilities can significantly shape your build as you progress through the game.

Choose an Origin for Your Character

Each race has two distinct origin options, unique to that race. These origins make slight adjustments to your base Attributes but do not affect your Skills.

Occasionally, NPCs will have unique dialogue based on your race, such as the very first character who speaks to you in the prison, but these dialogue changes are minor and have little impact on gameplay, quests, or the overall story.

Customize Your Appearance

After choosing your Race and Origin, you can customize your character’s appearance. Adjust body type, skin tone, eye color, hairstyle, and more, including finer details like makeup and age. These customizations are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay.

Complete Your Character on the Overview Page

The final screen after customization is the overview menu. Here, you can enter your name and view a summary of your character, including your strengths that vary based on your chosen race and origin. Afterwards, you can continue and finally start going through the first quest.

Choose a Birthsign

As you progress through the starting area and reunite with Uriel Septim, he’ll eventually ask you to choose your Birthsign. There are standard options such as the Warrior or Mage, that give simple Attribute bonuses.

More complex Birthsigns, such as the Apprentice or Atronach, offer more powerful bonuses but also come with passive debuffs. Some Birthsigns also grant your character a special ability that can only be used once per in-game day.

This is a major decision that can significantly impact your playthrough, offering powerful bonuses and abilities, but also debuffs that significantly affect your playstyle if chosen. Be sure to read each Birthsign’s effects carefully before choosing.

・Bard

As you continue the quest, you’ll eventually speak with Baurus, one of the Blades guarding the Emperor. This leads to the menu where you choose your class.

Each class has a Specialization—Combat, Magic, or Stealth—that levels up the skills in these categories faster. Next, it has two Attributes that get a +5 stat bonus and lists 7 Skills as Major Skills for your character. The 7 major skills listed will get an immediate +20 stat bonus and also level up faster as you play.

After selecting your class, you will proceed through the sewers, the final area before exiting this underground section. The sewer's exit marks the end of the tutorial, after which you are free to explore all of Cyrodiil.

You Can Create a Custom Class

Custom Class Selection

Custom classes are best for experienced players or those looking for something different from the default options.

In the Custom Class menu, you must select your Specialization (Combat, Magic, or Stealth), pick two Attributes that get the immediate stat bonus, and choose seven Major Skills that receive the starting boost and level up faster:

Combat Skills Magic Skills Stealth Skills
・Armorer
・Athletics
・Blade
・Block
・Blunt
・Hand-to-hand
・Heavy Armor
・Alchemy
・Alteration
・Conjuration
・Destruction
・Illusion
・Mysticism

・Acrobatics
・Light Armor
・Marksman
・Mercantile
・Security

・Speechcraft

Can You Change Your Character Later On?

No, Your Character is Permanent After the Tutorial

The character that you exit the sewers with will be permanent. This includes your race, appearance, birthsign, and class.

Save Before Exiting the Sewers

Be sure to make a save before exiting the sewers, as this is the last opportunity to edit your entire character before heading out to Cyrodiil and starting your journey.

This is a useful method to start a new character without having to go through the lengthy starting area all over again, simply by reloading this save.
