This Spellsword builds you to be strong, fast, and equally skilled with both magic and the blade. For physical prowess, you want Athletics, Blade, and Block, to be powerful when fighting up-close. You also want to improve the Heavy Armor skill to get better mobility while wearing it.

For Magic, the school of Destruction should be your priority, having the strongest spells for dishing out raw magic damage. You'll also want some Restoration skill for better healing, since you'll be in the thick of battle and taking hits from time to time.

Attribute Priority for Spellsword

Attributes

Each level up will net you 12 Virtues (attribute points) that you can distribute to a max of 3 attributes. Early game for the Spellsword can focus on increasing your Strength, Endurance, and Willpower for better damage, higher HP, better Magicka regen, and more Fatigue.

Later on, as you level up, you can start investing in Intelligence to gain access to higher level spells as you raise your different magic skills via repeated use.

Best Weapon Types for Spellsword

Primary Destruction Spells
Secondary Longsword + Shield

With both the Destruction and Blade skills, you can flow seamlessly in and out of combat by opening with Destruction Spells from range, then closing in with your Longsword and Shield. When needed, you can retreat back to range and resume casting spells to keep dealing damage.

Destruction magic is ideal for dealing damage to enemies, while the Longsword is one of the most efficient and accessible weapons, boasting some of the best unique variants in the game. Cap it off with a Shield for extra defense, as you can still cast spells freely even with both hands occupied.

Best Identity for Spellsword

Best Race Best Origin
Dark Elf Dark Elf Vvardenfell

The Vvardenfell Dark Elf offers a balanced mix of Strength, Endurance, and Intelligence, making them excellent Spellswords. With strong bonuses to both melee and magic, they’re more suited for close-quarters combat than their High Elf counterparts, who favor ranged spellcasting.

The Dark Elf Spellsword can maneuver the battlefield well with their high Speed, blasting Destruction Magic at foes before quickly going in for the kill with the blade. You also get +10 to both Destruction and Blade skills, suiting this playstyle perfectly.

They have a passive 75% Fire resistance, which is massive since the jaws of Oblivion shoot fire at you endlessly. Other solid races to pick for Spellswords are:

  • Breton: +50% Magic Resistance, +50 Base Magicka, Good Magic stat bonuses
  • Orc: +25% Magic Resistance, Solid Strength and Willpower stats, Heavy Armor stat bonus, Berserk Racial Power

Best Race to Play

Use the Ancestor Guardian Racial Power for Support

Furthermore, the Ancestor Guardian Dunmer racial power can also help you in a pinch, as your Ancestor fights with you and distracts your foes leaving them more open.

Best Birthsign for Spellsword

Best Birthsign Description
The Lady The Lady Those born under the sign of The Lady benefit from increased Willpower and Endurance.
・ Fortify Willpower: Increases Willpower by 10 points.
・ Increases Endurance by 10 points.

The Lady is one of the more optimal choices for Spellswords since it boosts Willpower and Endurance, which are the Spellsword's two key Attributes.

The Endurance makes you more tanky, as you will be going in melee range often. The Willpower boost is perfect for your stamina pool and Magicka regeneration, sustaining you in fights.

These Attributes are perfect for making your Spellsword a powerhouse with both magical and physical damage, and importantly, tough to take down. Here are some alternatives that also provide solid value to Spellsword builds:

  • The Lord: +15 Armor Rating and +15% Magic Resistance. Good for more defense.
  • The Mage: +50 Magicka for more Spellcasting-heavy players.
  • The Warrior: +10 Strength and Endurance, which is good for more Melee attack-heavy players.
