Best Skills

Skill Explanation
Mysticism Has some of the best spells and enchants that can be used for all different kinds of playstyles.
Restoration Fortify spells allow you to heavily boost your stats beyond what is normally be achieved without it.
Destruction Main source of damage for spell casters, while non-casters use this skill's enchantments on weapons.
Alchemy Potions are incredibly versatile and can substitute spell casts for those using martial character builds.
Blade Better than Blunt since the best weapons available are bladed and Stealth builds also utilize Daggers.
Marksman A Stealth build's main source of damage, but other builds can also utilize it for free Paralysis procs.
Illusion Provides the best forms of crowd control, which can be further enhanced with custom spells.
Heavy or Light Armour Need to level at least one armour skill, but Heavy is preferred if you're not using Light from the beginning.
Acrobatics Great utility skill that opens up new movement options and lets you reach normally inaccessible areas.
Athletics You're always running around, and increasing your move speed is a nice quality of life improvement.

Mysticism is one of the most important skills to level up because of the spells and enchants you get. Aside from the ever useful Spell Reflection, having Soul Trap is near mandatory for maintaining your enchantments, and you can get infinite Magicka with the combo of Spell Absorption and Telekinesis.

Reduces the Magicka cost when casting Restoration spells. Higher levels allow you to cast better Restoration spells.

Even though this skill is more known for its healing, what makes it really strong is actually the different Fortify spells you get access to. When combined with custom spell creation, you can start buffing your attributes and skills to values that cannot be reached without it.

Destruction

Reduces the Magicka cost when casting Destruction spells. Higher levels allow you to cast better Destruction spells.

Aside from being the main damage for mages, Destruction has some of the most important offensive enchantments in the game. If you combine effects like Weakness to Magic, Fire, Frost, and Shock with Drain Health, Fire Damage, Frost Damage, and Shock Damage, you can easily wipe out any enemy in the game.

Also, if you use Absorb or Damage Speed to reduce an enemy's Speed attribute to 0, they will be rendered immobile, allowing you to get free hits and sneak attacks in easily.

Alchemy can be daunting to get into for newer players, but being able to apply powerful effects at will without casting a spell is incredibly useful. It's recommended to level this as soon as possible so that making potions becomes a lot easier and it won't be as confusing.

Affects how much damage you deal with Daggers, Shortswords, Longswords, and Claymores.

For melee combat, Blade is preferred over Blunt, not just because of the weapons you get access to throughout the entire game, but also because Stealth builds benefit from the bonus damage it gives for Daggers. This makes it a more versatile skill that can be used on most builds and is never unappreciated.

As for Marksman, this is the lesser of the main damage skills because it's mostly used on stealth builds and it isn't as versatile as Destruction or Blade. However, this is still very important to level since a Master Marksman can paralyze targets without having to use spells.

Illusion provides some of the best crowd control effects in the game, making difficult fights much more manageable. This becomes even more powerful once you start crafting custom spells since you'll be able to increase the duration and range of the illusory effects.

It's important that you level up at least one armour skill while playing the game so that you're not entirely defenseless against physical attacks. Generally, the choice comes down to player preference or the build and playstyle that's being used, but Heavy Armour is slightly favoured since it has more durability.

Even if this is a utility skill, it's one of the more important ones to level up since it helps you with exploring the world and evading attacks. It also makes it easier to get to places you normally can't reach, letting you either avoid a trap or fight, or even reach a vantage point where enemies cannot see or reach you.
