Spellsword for Blade and Magic

Spellsword Class

Spellswords are considered the overall best class to use in Oblivion since they have the best of both melee and magic playstyles. Even being a spellcaster, you have great durability with Heavy Armor and Block proficiency as well as access to Restoration magic for sustain.

There are practically no downsides when playing a Spellsword except early on where you'll have to manage all your resources in combat. It all pays off later on though when you have all the options you could possibly need.

Warrior for Pure Melee Combat

Warrior Class

The Warrior class is great for players that want to engage purely in melee combat while having great defense to back you up. The playstyle uses any melee weapon you can get your hands on to get up close and personal with any foe.

While Warrios are the best at melee, they have no reliable ranged options that they can use. You'll have to be quick on your feet and close the gap to get into melee range.

Assassin for a Stealth Playstyle

Assassin Class

Assassins have all the tools you would need for a fun stealth playthrough being able to use both Daggers and Bows to perform sneak attacks. You'll also have Alchemy proficiency to create potions and poisons while also having the added utility of the Security skill.

All of the above are the perfect ingredients for a sneaky playstyle but you'll be quite fragile when out of stealth with only a proficiency in Light Armor and low Block skill.

Custom Class Tips

Tips on Creating Custom Classes

Select Only Essential Skills

Creating a Custom Class allows you the freedom to pick your Specialization, Favorable Attributes, and Major Skills. This is the best way to optimize your character build letting you select only the essential skills you need without being forced into ones you don't.

Avoid Athletics and Acrobatics

Both Athletics and Acrobatics level up passively as you play through the game. With this in mind, you won't need the bonus skill gain for them as doing so will risk being overleveled which means enemies become more difficult compared to the level of your combat skills.

Have At Least an Armor Skill

In any Custom Class you create, you should try to fit one of Heavy Armor or Light Armor in your build to gain defensive benefits. Taking Block is good as well if your build can use it.
