Byleth works magic with Mystical characters, something sorely overlooked on the recommended. The staff he provides extending the range of tomes far outweighs his other benefits on non-mystical allies. Celine would be my pick, she's decent quick and her massive luck stat as ot puts the trigger over 100% for turning a miss into a hit. Missing S rank in Tomes does hurt, but you can give your S rank Tome to Veyle and combo her with Soren or Celica either for double crit or 3 range Echo

Here's what unit types get which weapons whenever they are paired with Byleth. Qi Adept - Rafail Gem Cavalry - Areadbhar Armored - Aegis Shield Covert - Failnaught Flying - Lúin Mystical - Thyrsus Backup - Blutgang Dragon - Aymr
I think that Covert Units get Failnaught, mages get Thyrsus, and… umm…. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE JUST FIND THE WEAPON CORRESPONDENCE PLEASEEEEEEEEE
Anna classed as a sage/high priest seems like she would work with with byleth. She gets even more luck from byleth (and as a high priest she can reach the absolute maximum at 59 luck) and she gets thyrsus. Even the sword of the creator gets more powerful with more magic, which Anna gets a lot of.
It turns out that Byleth’s Engage Weapon varies based on the unit type, can someone do a unit type and corresponding weapon chart - like with Corrin’s (and Camilla’s) Dragon Vein? Thxxxxx
