How to Recruit Vander

Joins Alear in Chapter 1

Fire Emblem Engage - Vander

Vander is one of the first characters that will join your party, with him fighting alongside Alear as early as the tutorial stages of Chapter 1: Awake at Last.

Advanced Class from the Start

Fire Emblem Engage - Vander Stats

Vander proves to be a force to be reckoned with at the early stages of the game since his class, Paladin, is already an Advanced class.

While this makes him one of the strongest at the start, being an Advanced class also means that he needs more EXP to level up compared to Base class units, hence Vander not leveling up as quickly as the rest.

Leif Bond Level 18

Given his role as cavalry, it's best to increase his movement range through Canter+.

When preparing counterattack measures, use Holy Stance++ to deal massive damage to Corrupted units.

Vantage++ will make sure Vander attacks first; and in most cases kill an enemy before they attack, especially when used with Strength +5.

Recommended Emblems

SigurdSigurd LeifLeif RoyRoy

Vander's high mobility with great HP, Spd and Def stat growth make him an ideal unit for charging the front lines. Leif and Ike are both great for maximizing Vander's defense, as he is usually the first to be exposed to enemies.

Leif grants amazing counterattacks as it chooses the best weapon against an enemy while engaged, while Ike halves damage taken.

Pairing Vander with Sigurd comes most naturally to add to Vander's movement and Atk power for a more offensive position. Celica is a great alternative for giving Vander more effective counterattacks.

Vander Paired Ending and Romance

Pact Ring with Vander

After clearing Chapter 22, players unlock The Connector Paralogue and can subsequently unlock the Pact Ring. This essentially acts as Fire Emblem Engage's S-Rank Support and romance route.

Alear can then give the ring to Vander once they have attained an A-Rank in support to view a special cutscene, and unlock a page in the reference about the life they lived together.

Vander's Memento

Vander's fine velour choker from his civilian clothes. He gave me this as a symbol of his loyalty.

Apart from obtaining an exclusive ending with Vander after giving the Pact Ring, players can also head to Alear's room and check the small table next to their bed to find a memento from him.

While the memento serves no purpose in combat whatsoever unlike the Merc Whistle in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, it further contextualizes the paired ending selected by the player.

Vander falls off way too quickly to stay as a Paladin or change into a Great Knight. The only decent way to leverage use out of him long term is to take advantage of staves. The class he can perform decently in is Griffin Knight with swords. Royal Knight seems like it would be fun utility wise, but the problem is that his build is so low that he can't use high tier lances without plummeting in speed. His +3 def and -2 res to the cap evens out the stats pretty well.
