Fire Emblem Engage Mainline

Fire Emblem Engage is the 17th installment of the mainline Fire Emblem series, succeeding Fire Emblem: Three Houses in 2019.

After Three Houses, Engage is the second mainline Fire Emblem game to launch on the Nintendo Switch (but fourth overall, if including the spin-offs Fire Emblem Warriors and Three Hopes).

Is Engage Canon?

Being a mainline game, Fire Emblem Engage's main story is solidified as part of the overall canon. However, the game's primary Emblem Ring feature makes it clear that the heroes within the rings are not their original selves, but rather echoes of their legends.

In the game, you're able to summon past main characters of the series through Emblem Rings, which allow you to sync with said characters and utilize their abilities in battle. The game does make it clear that you're essentially summoning their spirit from the Emblem Ring, as Marth says "I am known as Marth. Emblem Marth, to be clear," so any inconsistencies could simply be explained away by the argument that it's not actually the character.

When Does Engage Take Place?

Set in the new continent of Elyos and introducing a brand-new cast of characters, Engage doesn't directly continue the story of any previous Fire Emblem game. Past characters appear as Emblems which have already gone through their own legends, as each Emblem talks about their backstories in their respective Paralogues, so it can be assumed that Engage takes place after these games.

Fire Emblem is also no stranger to multiple universe with the Outrealms from past games, so it's possible that Engage exists as yet another universe aware of the legends of other heroes.

Additionally, Alear can already be seen fighting alongside the Emblems in the Prologue, which is set before a 1000-year time jump to the present day of the story. Given all these, it could be surmised that Engage is either set in the distant future or an entirely separate world.
