Protagonist Name
Protagonist Name is Customizable
At the beginning of the game, you're free to name the main character as you wish. After inputting the name at the start of the game, you cannot change the protagonist's name at any point later in the story.
Selecting a name, birthday, and gender for the protagonist are considered points of no return, as they can't be changed later on.

Canon Name is Alear
The canon name of Fire Emblem Engage's protagonist is Alear. They're a successor to the family of Divine Dragons, who is reawoken after 1,000 years to defeat a reemerging ancient threat, the Fell Dragon. However, the thousand-year slumber has impaired Alear's memory, so the player must re-learn the history of the world of Elyos alongside Alear.
Guided by past protagonists and characters of the series
Aside from the allies that Alear encounters in the land of Elyos, Alear can also summon via Emblem Rings previous protagonists from the series such as Marth, Ike, and Sigurd. It's Alear's quest to gather the Emblem Rings from the different kingdoms.

As with more recent Fire Emblem games such as Fates and Three Houses, players have the option of choosing between a male and female version of the protagonist. The distinction mostly affects appearance and selection of outfits. As with Corrin and Byleth (the protagonists of the aforementioned games), there likely isn't a canon gender option for the protagonist of Fire Emblem Engage.

Customization Options
The protagonist's design comes with a unique blue and red hair color that's split down the middle, as well as heterochromia that makes one of Alear's eyes blue and the other one red. This signature look of the character is unchangeable.

However, you can customize the protagonist's clothes and equipped accessories at the Boutique and the amiibo Gazebo, both located in the Somniel home base.
However, these cosmetic changes are not depicted during battle and only at the Somniel.

Obtain Emblem Costumes With Fire Emblem amiibos
Aside from the default purchasable cosmetics at the Boutique, you can also gain exclusive emblem specific costumes by using amiibos in the amiibo shrine. You have to use fire emblem amiibos to gain fire emblem cosmetics however.
