Madeline joins Alear's party during Chapter 4 the Fell Xenologue DLC storyline.
While Madeline is playable during the events of the Fell Xenologue, they can't actually be customized or reclassed until they officially join the party after the Fell Xenologue credits roll.

From what I could tell with Madeline she's meant to be a sort of bodyguard character. Her skill her high defense. At least that's the impression she left on me.
