What are Lost Items?
Gift Giving Feature Replaces Lost Items
In previous games, Lost Items are discovered as you progress through the game and returning them to their owner increases your Support with them. In Fire Emblem Engage, these are removed entirely, leaving only gifts as a way to increase support when speaking to characters in the Somniel.
Depending on how much they favored the gift, you will get a boost in support with that character.

Although Lost Items are no longer in the game, characters can inherit Byleth's Lvl 13 Bond Effect, Lost & Found, to randomly find items while in battle and increase support with an adjacent ally.

When Can You Return Lost Items?
Give Gifts Anytime in the Somniel
You can give gifts to your units at any time in the Somniel. Gifts can be found on the ground or purchased from the Flea Market.

This article isn't true. I just randomly walked over a tile in my paralogue battle with Marth and it said "returned lost item to Veyle." I then googled to see what it meant because I've never seen that in the game before.
