Class Change Guide: When to Promote Units

Class Change allows you to promote your unit to a stronger version of their class. Learn when to promote your units, how to class change and reclass, and when's the best time to class change.

When to Promote Units

After getting Master Seals Promote units as early as you can. Promote units if next battle looks difficult.

After Getting Master Seals

Master Seals Obtainable After Chapter 6

You can only promote your units with Master Seals. You can start obtaining Master Seals in Chapter 7, then via the Item Shop in Chapter 13.

Promote as Early as You Can

Advanced Classes don't level up slower than Base Classes. In the photos below, the same enemy unit was killed by 2 different Alear's (1 as the base Dragon Child class and 1 as the advanced Divine Dragon class). Both Alear's got the same 30 EXP gain when killing the same enemy, regardless of their class.

Since there is no EXP penalty for promoting early, we recommended promoting as soon as possible, so that you can get stronger units right away.

You can use a Second Seal to reset level

Fire Emblem Engage is not like pre-Awakening games, where there was no way to reset your level once you hit the max Level 20 on Advanced Classes. Here, you can spend a Second Seal to reset the level of your class back to 1 but maintain the stats you've grown thus far.

By the time you hit the advanced level cap, Second Seals shouldn't be limited in quantity anymore.

Additionally, you don't need to change to another class then back (costing 2 Second Seals) to reset your level. You can just use 1 Second Seal. This makes it easier to reset your level and allows you to level up more and continue growing your stats.

Promote Early If Next Battle Looks Too Difficult

Remember that you can view battle layouts before beginning the battle. If the next map/battle looks challenging, you can promote the units you predominantly use to Advanced Classes. Promoting your unit to an Advanced Class will greatly increase that unit's stats, allowing you to get through the map with greater ease.

Best Units to Promote and Class Change

Early On (Around Chapter 10)

Around Chapter 10 is when your units should be hitting Level 10 and be ready for promotion. These are the units to prioritize promoting around that point in the game.

Unit	Reason
Alear (F)	・Since you always need to deploy them ・More stats for the main character are always better.
Diamant	・Gets axes on promote, which gives him access to a 1-2 range with hand axes ・Considered an S-tier unit for the main story (Unit Tier List)
Chloe	・Worth considering for an early Griffin Knight unit ・This'll allow her to use staves and the Clear the Way skill
Alfred	・Gets 1 more Mov, as well as swords, with the Avenir class
Framme	・Has surprisingly decent Str, Mag, and Spd growths ・For that reason, High Priest and Martial Master are worth considering ・If built well from the start, could replace use of Pandreo as High Priest later on.
Jean	・Has fitting stats for High Priest ・Worth considering if you need another magic user or High Priest
Louis	・Become better all-around as Generals ・Great Knight would also be suitable, for extra Mov (but this requires proficiencies)
Jade	・Become better all-around as Generals ・Great Knight would also be suitable, for extra Mov (but this requires proficiencies)

How to Promote a Unit

Unit Needs to be Level 10 or Higher

In order to Class Change, your unit needs to be at least Level 10 or higher in order to be promoted to a stronger version of their class. In the Menu, select the Level 10 or higher unit to trigger a drop-down menu and select the last option Class Change.

In the Class Change menu, you are given a list of classes your unit can change into, with classes you meet the requirements to change into placed at the top.

Use Master Seal to Class Change

In order to promote your unit into a higher tier version of their current class, you'll need a Master Seal. Master Seals can either be purchased for for 2,500 Gold at the Item Shop or be acquired by progressing through the story.

Once you have a Master Seal, the higher-tier version of your unit's class should be listed at the top of the Class Change menu. Confirm your decision to Class Change, then an animation will play showing your unit's class and outfit change.

How to Reclass to a Different Class

Go to Class Change Menu

Vander as Berseker Class

Reclassing is when you change your unit into an entirely different class. Similar to Class Changing, reclassing can be done in the Class Change menu. However, your unit does not need to be Level 10 or higher to be reclassed.

Go to the Class Change menu and look at the list of classes your unit can change into. Select the new class you wish to change into and confirm the selection.

Requires Weapon Proficiency

Reclassing requires certain Weapon Proficiency. A unit's Proficiency with a certain weapon allows them better performance in the corresponding classes.

The required Weapon Proficiency is denoted beside the class name on the Class Change list. Units lacking the necessary Profiency can inherit them from Emblems, which will improve their performance in the class.

Second Seal Needed to Reclass

Additionally, in order to reclass into a different class of the same tier, you'll need a Second Seal. You can purchase Second Seals for 2,500 Gold at the Item Shop or obtain them from treasure chests.

What is Class Change?

In Fire Emblem Engage, you can use the Class Change menu to promote your unit into a higher tier version of their current class or have them shift into an entirely different class. With every Class Change, your unit is brought back to Level 1.

Promoted classes have increased stats and can use more weapons.
