If you have Network Features turned on in Settings and have a Wi-Fi connection, then you'll see Spirits of the Fallen appear in battle. Note that this feature is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers only.

The wisp-like spirits indicate the spaces where units have commonly died in other players' battles. Yellow spirits indicate where other players' allied units have died, while purple spirits indicate where enemy units have died fighting other players.

While not exactly game-breaking, knowing the spaces where units have a high average of dying can help you map out your strategy, especially on Classic Mode or Maddening Difficulty.

In addition, having a unit finish a turn on the space will give them either EXP or an item. Yellow spirits increase the unit's EXP or Bond Level with an Emblem.

On the other hand, purple spirits allow you to pick up a random item item dropped by the fallen enemy. These pickup items aren't rare, so it's recommended to just sell them for extra gold.
