List of Contents
1. Talk to character at the pond to fish. 2. Cast fishing line into the pond. 3. Press A when the bobber gets pulled underwater. 4. Pull fish the opposite direction of where it's swimming with left joycon, then button mash A. 5. Press A again to confirm catch. |
It does not matter where you cast your fishing line in the pond, whether it's on calm water or ripples of water. The type of fish that can be caught is determined by the time of day.
If you press too soon, you'll have to cast again. The minigame may mislead you by having the bobber only slightly dip into the water, which would lead you to pressing too soon. For this reason, it's better to use the audio cue of the character shouting "Now!" than the visual cue of the bobber dipping.
If you're fishing with Sommie and have a high interaction rate with it, it could provide assistance if you take too long to reel the line in.
You don't exactly need to wait for the fish to reach the lightly colored bottom area of the triangle to stun it. You can button mash A at any point in the triangle to lower its health bar, but do so carefully. Mashing A when it's outside the lightly colored area, pushes the fish away from you and could cause you to lose it.
Press A again when the outer circle meets the inner circle to confirm the catch. Don't worry about getting the timing exactly right, because the outer circle merely comes to a stop at the inner circle.
Fishing Rod | Maximum Attempts |
---|---|
Modest Rod | 3 |
Sturdy Rod | 6 |
Supreme Rod | 10 |
Once you unlock fishing, you can fish up to 3 times after every battle, increasing up to 10 attempts once you own better rods. Note that the game says you can only fish a limited number of times a day, but that's not exactly correct. Fishing is not determined by in-game days or the days on the Nintendo Switch.
Along with various ingredients, you collect Bond Fragments from fishing! Each fish has a set amount of Bond Fragments you get alongside it and this is doubled if the fish has a fishing bonus (which is predetermined at the start of the minigame). You should get roughly 200 Bond Fragments for every 3 fish you catch on the Modest Rod (the lowest level rod).
Fishing Rod | How to Get |
---|---|
Sturdy Rod | Buy at the Flea Market for 500 G after clearing Chapter 16 |
Supreme Rod | Buy at the Flea Market for 800 G after clearing Chapter 20 |
Two more rods can be bought at the Flea Market once you beat certain chapters later in the game. These rods will allow you to catch larger fish and increase the number of attempts you can fish after every battle.
