Kill an Innocent NPC and Sleep on a Bed

Bed Sleep

You can get the Blade of Woe by first killing an NPC in the game. Once you've murdered an innocent NPC, you will need to sleep on a bed.

You can try visiting an inn to gain access to a bed. After you wake up, a man named Lucien Lachance will introduce himself and offer you to join their Dark Brotherhood.

Kill Innocent NPC to Trigger Lucien Encounter

The NPC victim will need to be innocent or non-hostile for Lucien to appear. If successful, you will be prompted by the game through a message saying that "Your killing has been observed by forces unknown...".

Accept A Knife in the Dark Quest From Lucien Lachance

Luciene Lachance

Once you've met up with Luciene Lachane, he will give you a task to kill Rufio at the Inn of Ill Omen.

If you've accepted the task, Lucien will give you the Blade of Woe, and A Knife in the Dark Quest will be added to your quest list.

Complete the Honor Thy Mother Quest

Night Mother

Complete the Honor Thy Mother Quest, which would be the last quest of the Dark Brotherhood questline in the game.

Talk to the Night Mother after you've completed the quest. During your conversation, she will ask if you are ready to be sent to the Cheydinhal Sanctuary.

Once you've agreed to be sent to the sanctuary, the Night Mother will bestow a special reward and enhance the Blade of Woe for you.
