Ambush is located in the Arcane University in the Imperial City. Speak to Archmage Hannibal Traven in his quarters to start the quest.

Speak with Hannibal Traven
You will need to finish both The Bloodworn Helm and The Necromancer's Amulet to start this quest. Speak to Archmage Hannibal Traven to start the quest who will direct you to go to the ruins of Silorn to retrieve a unique black soul gem from the necromancers before they can hand it over to Mannimarco.
Silorn is Southeast of Skingrad
The ruins of Silorn are located just southeast of Skingrad. We recommend fast travelling to the city as it's closer to the location than the Imperial City.
Arrange the Battlemages
Talk to Thalfin who is the leader of the three battlemages who will be assisting you in ambushing the necromancers, and you'll need to arrange their battle positions based on their skills and strengths.
Best Battlemage Positions

Speak to each of the battlemages and ask their Abilities to learn more about their strengths. Thalfin will admit to being better at using an axe than magic, so we recommend putting her up close.
Iver notes that he's good at both magic and weapons, but mostly focuses on healing. We recommend putting him up close so that he can heal Thalfin.
Finally, Merete says she's better at casting spells than using weapons and notes that she's excellent at large-scale spells Tell her to keep your distance so she can provide ranged support to the other battlemages.
With these positions, all of the battlemages will survive in the ensuing ambush.
Head into the Ruins
Speak to Thalfin after arranging their position to start the ambush. Keep your distance and wait for Falcar and the necromancers to exit the ruins, and join the battlemages once they attack.
You'll eventuially get a notification that Falcar has run back to the ruins. If you positioned the battlemages correctly, you can leave them behind as they will easily defeat the remaining necromancers.
Make Your Way to Silorn Sedorseli
The ruins of Silorn are filled with Necromancers and the undead that they'll summon. Follow the path until you reach a large intersection and take the southwestern tunnel until you reach a door to Silorn Sedorseli.
Once in Silorn Sedorseli, make your way to the north door heading back to Silorn and press the button on the balcony to open the door to Silorn Buroseli.
Defeat Falcar
Hop off the balcony and from the central area, head to the north door leading to Silorn Buroseli. Follow the path until you come across Falcar who will start attacking you.
Falcar is not a particularly tough boss but he attacks rather fast with his dagger. Defeat him and loot the Colossal Black Soul Gem from his body, and then exit the ruins.
Return to Hannibal Traven
Make your way back to the Arcane University in the Imperial City and speak to Hannibal Traven who will thank you for obtaining the Colossal Black Soul Gem and will unlock the next quest.
Ambush Rewards
Unlocks Confront the King
Completing the quest lets you start the succeeding quest, Confront the King.
