The name Neroli is derived from the essential oil of the same name extracted from bitter orange trees, primarily used in fragrances. The scent it gives off is mostly sweet like honey, with hints of spiciness.
Apart from that, Neroli is also a pun on the Japanese word 寝る(Neru), which means sleep!
A lot of installments in the Pokemon franchise tend to derive the names of Pokemon professors from trees. However, Neroli is less of a tree and more of an oil extracted from one.
Despite not being named entirely after a tree, it's safe to say that Professor Neroli still rides the trend of professors being named after flora, or things associated with it.
Professor Neroli's primary field of research is the various sleeping patterns of Pokemon. In order to further advance in his research, he will enlist your help to gather a wide array of Pokemon through sleeping patterns of your own!
As of the moment, little is known about Professor Neroli's background. Stay tuned for more updates on his lore and story!
Professor Neroli was first announced in Pokemon Sleep's introductory video as one of your companions in the game, and will oversee the project of studying both your own sleeping patterns and that of Pokemon!
