Pokemon will appear from habitats where you'll be able to befriend them and join your group. Some Pokemon will only appear under certain time and weather conditions.

A handful of Pokemon have been shown to have some unique appearances. These include a Tangrowth that serves as your mentor, an unusually pale Pikachu, a Snorlax covered in moss, and a messily colorful Smeargle.
These Unique Pokemon will likely serve as helpful NPCs as you work to make your world a better place.

Unlike the mainline games, the way you will encounter Pokemon in Pokopia is meeting them in habitats that you have built. There are no battle encounters and evolutions in the game, as you will only meet and befriend one Pokemon of each species.
Additionally, there are no Shiny Pokemon in the game and all Pokemon that you will meet will be in their regular appearances.

To befriend Pokemon and make then join your group, you have to make the Habitat where they can appear from.
Once you make a Habitat, you can interact with the area to make a Pokemon that can appear in the respective Habitat show up. You can then befriend them and make them stay.
Pokemon that you befriend may ask for Requests, which are side quests, or teach you Moves that you can use to transform the land and add grass tiles and flowers, destroy stone blocks, cultivate soil, and more!

Pokemon that can appear in a habitat is affected by the current weather and the time of day. This means that different Pokemon may appear during the day or at night, or when it is sunny or rainy.
Some Pokemon are also less likely to appear due to their rarity, so make sure to create various habitats around the map!
All of these information can be checked from the Pokedex and the Habitat Dex.

If you may sometimes encounter sparkling spots on the map which give you traces of Pokemon. These will show you silhouettes of the Pokemon that may appear in a Habitat while also giving you information on how to make the respective Habitat!

You can get recipes for furniture as you befriend Pokemon and fill up your Pokedex. You can craft these recipes from Workbenches and place them in the overworld to decorate the space with items.

There are unique stats that each Pokemon have in Pokopia. These refer to how they can help you out once you befriend them, and what things they prefer in their Habitats or houses.

Specialties are jobs that each Pokemon can perform once you befriend them. You can assign Pokemon to help with making buildings, tending your gardens, or finding items.

Pokemon will have their own preferences on how they want their Habitat to feel like. Some Pokemon may want a bright space, so you need to add lights to illuminate the area. Some may want warm houses which can be reached by building campfires.

Pokemon will also have certain favorites which dictate what items and furniture they would want to have within their Habitats or houses. You can raise their comfort level if you place these items near them.
