Befriend Scyther

Lumber is obtained by processing small logs with Scyther's (or any Pokemon with a Chop specialty) help.

With that said, the first step to getting lumber in the early game is befriending Scyther. They will appear on Tree-shaded tall grass, which is a habitat made by growing 4 tiles of tall grass next to a large tree.

Gather Small Logs

Scyther Request

Soon after befriending Scyther, they will ask for 2 sturdy sticks through a request that will unlock the Move Cut. This Move allows you to shred wooden objects, like trees and log piles, to obtain small logs. These small logs are the raw materials required to get lumber.

Plant Seeds for More Trees

Pokopia - Use Cut
Aside from logs, trees can also drop seeds when you cut them down. Be sure to plant these seeds and tend to them so that you have a steady supply of logs and lumber.

Some Pokemon can also give you seeds as a gift after befriending them.

Process Small Logs Into Lumber

Process Small Logs

Bring the small logs that you've collected to Scyther, and they will start processing them into lumber! The process takes some time, so you'll need to return later to collect the finished product.

Later on in the game, you can obtain lumber by giving small logs to any Pokemon with the Chop specialty.
