Part ways with following Pokemon |
A faster way to ask a Pokemon to follow you is to approach them and press the Up button on your controller. Ditto will react as well as the target Pokemon, then the Pokemon will start to follow you.
If you want Pokemon to stop following you, you can hold the Up button, and you'll part ways.

Up to five Pokemon can follow you at a time. If you need to swap out some Pokemon, you can ask Pokemon to stop following you before you ask another Pokemon to start following you.

The main reason you'll probably want a Pokemon to follow you is to make use of their specialties. Each Pokemon has a specific job it can do based on its specialty.
If you lead a Pokemon to an item or location where they can make use of their specialty, they will automatically perform the associated task. For example, if you lead Charmander, which has the Burn specialty, to an unlit campfire, it will ignite it.
List of Pokemon by Specialties

Constructing a building using a building kit requires specific Pokemon to be brought to the site. Interact with the box in front of the construction site to see the materials and Pokemon you need.
If the required Pokemon are available on your island, you can ask them to follow you so that you may lead them to the construction site.

Pokemon do not need to stay in the habitat you discover them from. You can build houses for them to move into in order for them to be more comfortable.
Once a house is ready, you can ask a Pokemon to follow you to the house. Then, talk to them to ask them to move into their new home.

Some Pokemon may request that you bring them to a particular place or do a particular activity. You'll need to ask them to follow you in order to fulfill these types of requests.
