Do You Need To Play the First Bravely Default Before Bravely Default 2?

Bravely Default 2 is a new entry to the franchise

Despite the misleading title, Bravely Default 2 is actually the third entry for the franchise. The first game, Bravely Default, was followed up with a sequel titled Bravely Second. Bravely Default 2 is meant to be seen as a rebirth to the franchise by the creators after Bravely Second received a poorer reception than expected.

Similarities Between Bravely Default 1 and 2

Both games features Crystals

Similarly to the first game, the heroes in Bravely Default 2 will be working to restore crystals back to grace. Restoring the crystals gave a support skill slot to the previous game, but it is still unknown what it will provide in Bravely Default 2.

Both games makes use of the Job System

The Job system is a system that allows your characters to change their abilities according to the chosen class (Job) that was assigned to them. A character that was a warrior will be able to cast spells if that character's class is changed to a spell caster and vice versa.
