How to Save the First Druid Halsin

Find Halsin at the Worg Pens

Goblin Camp Map and Location
Goblin Camp
X: 401, Y: 25

The First Druid Halsin can be found in the Worg Pens, deep within the Shattered Sanctum inside the Goblin Camp.

The Goblin Camp can be accessed early on by simply heading west from the Blighted Village. You will have pass through several dialogue checks, however, unless you choose to fight (which is several times harder) with low-level characters.

Having a party of Lv. 3 members is recommended for this side quest in case fights break out along the way.

Nearby Volo Ersatz Eye Quest

Baldur

When looking for the Shattered Sanctum entrance to get to Halsin, Volo can be found at the middle of the Goblin Camp.

By talking to him, you can initiate the side quest to gain his Ersatz Eye, a permanent passive that can let a character See Invisibility.

Nearby Owlbear Cub Quest

Baldur

If you are following the Owlbear Cub questline, the cub should also be present here provided you have taken one Long Rest after confronting its mother in the Owlbear Nest.

Obtaining the Owlbear Cub for your camp leads to potential party member approvals when you interact with it in certain ways.

Get Past Warrior Trinzas

Warrior Trinzas: State yer business, now. (Rune Glows)
Dialogue Options Dialogue Results
[ILLITHID] [WISDOM] (DC2)] I'm not here to talk to a lowly guard.
Success:
Granted entry.
Failure:

[DECEPTION (DC15)] I've got an audience with the one in charge.
Success:

[INTIMIDATION (DC15)] You don't need to know about my business. Move.
Success:

Sent off.
[DETECT THOUGHTS (DC9)] Probe her thoughts. Success:
Gain dialogue option to grant entry.
Failure:
Starts battle.
They seem ready to attack - be the one to strike first.
Result:
Starts battle.

Choosing to Detect Thoughts is one of the easiest to succeed in above after the Illithid option.

Upon entering the Shattered Sanctum, go down the hallway until you are stopped by Warrior Trinzas.

Succeeding in the non-violent dialogue options with her will have her grant you passage!

You can opt to fight and defeat the guards, which is much harder than trying to persuade her.

Enter the Worg Pens

Location
Worg Pens
(Shattered Sanctum)

Baldur

The Worg Pens is another area accessible through the Shattered Sanctum. After making it past Warrior Trinzas, continue forward and take the stairs to the direct right of True Soul Gut's altar.

You will come across the prison cell of Volo. Next to Volo's cell is an opening showing a long wooden bridge. Cross the bridge to make it to an area with three goblins and a wooden door.

The goblins will not stop you from entering the room (unless you intend to fight). Interact with the door to make it into the Worg Pens.

Free the Cave Bear by Killing the Goblins

Baldur

The First Druid Halsin is a wild-shifted Cave Bear locked behind a gate by three goblins. Approaching them will trigger a set of dialogue options where you can choose to leave the bear be to stoned (or even partake in it) or choose to free the bear.

If you are going to be saving Halsin, then the only choice is to defeat all of the goblins. Before getting into this encounter, you will want to consider what you can do with the other goblins roaming around the area.

Talk to Halsin After the Battle

Baldur

After successfully defeating all of the enemies in the area, the Cave Bear will shapeshift back into Halsin's true form. This will lead to dialogue options that reveal about the Mnid Flayer's Parasite and Halsin's intentions to protect the Druid Grove.

From here, you can take up Halsin's request to help him defeat the three True Souls: True Soul Gut, Dror Ragzlin, and Nightwarden Minthara.

Isolate Warrior Plig from the Goblins

Baldur

Plig will usually sit on a bench when he makes it to the southwest room with the chest. There is enough space behind him for a sneak attack.

Warrior Plig is a roaming goblin in the Worg Pens. His roaming path is between the upper northeast gate the and southwest room with the chest.

The best way to deal with him is to isolate him from the others. Wait for him until he walks into the southwest room. Once he is there, you can kill him with a sneak attack (with a Rogue or Astarion).

This ensures there is no flanking enemy when you engage both Zurks and Vrak at the butcher's table.

Astarion Companion Guide

Prioritize Zurks and Vrak

Baldur

After taking care of Warrior Plig, it is a good idea to prioritize killing Beastmaster Zurk and Butcher Vrak when they are together at the butchering table. Consider sneaking up on them and making the first strike to take advantage of the Surprise mechanic.

Surprise attacks will give your party a free turn at the start of battle before anybody else. This way, you can eliminate both of them fast and then start focusing on the young goblins near the bear.

Focus on the Young Goblins

Baldur

At the front of the Halsin's cell are the young goblins One and Three, and Brawler Birka. Whatever choice you made in attempting to rescue Halsin will always result in the death of Birka (since she dies in a scripted cutscene).

If you were able to defeat Zurks and Vrak quickly, focus on the young goblins One and Three. They will both attempt to use Dash to make it to the entrace and call for reinforcements.

To make it easy to deal with them, consider positioning a party member by the main stairway to be within a good striking range after their dash. Take note that their high dexterity can make killing them tricky.

Defeat Tale and Ferr

Baldur

The monsters Tale and Ferr are monstrosities locked behind a gate in a cell next to the bear. When battle has commenced, they will attempt to break out of their cell by damaging the gate.

Focus on eliminating the goblins quickly so that you can have time to set up area-of-effect attacks in their cell like Grease and Entagle.
