The Selune Chest, also known as the Gilded Chest, is a special kind of chest sealed with magic.
Attempting to interact with this chest will deal damage to your character. Another way must be used to open it safely.
Attacking the chest with either a physical or magic attack, or even throwing an item at it, will cause it to retaliate, dealing damage to whoever attempted to damage it.
When examined, it is shown to have Medium Toughness, meaning an attack of no less than 22 can only damage it. Even then, damaging it and tanking the damage is costly.
Unlocking the Selune Chess with the Selunite Prayer Sheet is the easier and safer way.
Have each party member make a Perception Check in this area if one fails.
In order to open the chest, use the Jump skill to cross the gap and move to the far end behind Selune's statue to roll a Perception Check. When successful, a Selunite Prayer Sheet that you can pick up will appear.
A Religion Check will also be made. Passing this check will hint to this sheet being the key to opening the chest (this is not required to open the chest.)
Jump back to where the chest is and get in front it. Have anyone except Shadowheart open their inventory to open and read the Selune Prayer Sheet in front of the Selune Chest.
The chest should be unsealed after closing the prayer sheet. You can now open the chest without taking damage. It contains some rare items, including the Idol of Selune.
NPC Dialogue | |
---|---|
Shadowheart: Do not trifle with that moon witch or her trinkets. Only trouble will follow. | Dialogue Options | Dialogue Results |
[INSIGHT (DC15)] Why do you care so much? |
Success: Shadowheart reveals her secret. (Daughter of Darkness) Failure: Earn Shadowheart's disapproval. |
[INTIMIDATION (DC15)] I'll do as I please. If you want to try stopping me, be my guest. |
Success: No effect on approval when taking chest items Failure: Earn Shadowheart's disapproval, taking chest items need a Sleight of Hand Check. |
[PERSUASION (DC10)] We can't just abandon resources that we might need. Be sensible. |
Success: No effect on approval when taking chest items. Failure: Earn Shadowheart's disapproval, taking chest items need a Sleight of Hand Check. |
If it matters that much to you, I'll leave it. |
Success: Leave the chest alone. Trying to take it with Shadowheart around will cause a Sleight of Hand Check. This causes disapproval from Astarion and Lae'zel. |
If you end up triggering her dialogue, refer to the options above and their results. Failing any of the checks will cause Shadowheart's approval to drop.
Shadowheart, due to being a Cleric of Shar, will reveal her opposition to Selune when you try to open the chest with her nearby.
The above dialogue choices are triggered when the Selune Chest is first opened with Shadowheart nearby. Shadowheart will disapprove the one who opens the chest in addition to the main character.
Performing a Sleight of Hand actually means you're concealing your attempt from Shadowheart in taking the items.
Trying to take the items when you have failed the skill checks will initiate a Sleight of Hand (Dexterity Check). The same happens if you lied about leaving the items alone. This choice has a Difficulty Class of 15.
Failing this Slight of Hand Check will further increase Shadowheart's disapproval. Succeeding in this check prevents this from happening.
Opening the Selune Chest with a companion while the main character is a good distance away from Shadowheart will instead trigger an alternate scene where Shadowheart contemplates on her conflicted thoughts about the treasure.
This prevents the dialogue list above with the main character, but it does not prevent the Sleight of Hand Check with taking the items from the chest.
Since opening the Selune Chest with Shadowheart nearby will trigger possible disapproval, you can get around this by either isolating her with Group Mode (you can put her at the cave entrance), or by not having her in the party.
This ensures the safety of opening the chest without any opposition from Shadowheart or approval changes from other party members. However, you can miss out on knowing Shadowheart's secret early on this way.
In this area, a nearby Owlbear and her cub can be found. Interacting with them is tied to another side quest which involves saving the Owlbear Cub from the Goblin Camp.
Successfully completing this questline will result in the Owlbear Cub joining your camp, which can raise the approval of your party members through interaction.
