Always bring a shovel with you so you won't miss out on loot!
In order to find Dirt Mounds, players will need to explore the map of Baldur's Gate 3. Every now and then, you will get a Survival Check while out and about. If you pass this successfully, it will usually reveal Dirt Mounds that you can dig up using your shovel.
If you are having a hard time passing the Survival Checks, consider partying up with Shadowheart as she has a nifty cantrip called Guidance which grants a bonus 1d4 roll for any Ability Checks the buffed character needs to perform.
In order to dig up Dirt Mounds, your party will need to have at least 1 Shovel. As long as one shovel is in the inventory of any one of your party members, you will be able to dig up any Dirt Mounds you find while out exploring. Remember, you only need 1 shovel in your party since your members will share the same shovel automatically when made to dig.
An already-revealed dirt mound will have a free shovel for your party during the opening segments of Act 1. To find this mound, simply head north after you encounter the injured Illithid inside the crashed Nautiloid. The mound can be found after you pass a few broken spike traps.
