Saving Throw is a mechanic in Baldur's Gate 3 that allows you to resist spells, status ailments, and environmental traps. Read on to learn more about Saving Throws and how it works in the game!
List of Contents
A Saving Throw gives your character the opportunity to completely resist taking damage from spells and negate status ailments such as poison and disease, as well as saving you from harm should you fall prey to environmental traps.
Once you find yourself in a position where a Saving Throw will occur, the game will automatically roll a d20 along with adding the appropriate ability modifier catered to the situation.
The ability bonus added to the ability modifier depends on what kind of spell and trap is casted on your character — these can range from Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
All Ability Effects and Modifiers
Proficiency adds a bonus to Saving Throws and boosts the chance of it to be successful. Each class is at least proficient with two saving throws. For example, a Fighter is proficient with Strength and Constitution saves.
Here's a full list for each class's Saving Throw proficiencies.
Class | Saving Throw Proficiency |
---|---|
Fighter | Strength and Constitution |
Barbarian | Strength and Constitution |
Bard | Dexterity and Charisma |
Cleric | Wisdom and Charisma |
Druid | Wisdom and Intelligence |
Paladin | Wisdom and Charisma |
Ranger | Strength and Dexterity |
Rogue | Dexterity and Intelligence |
Sorcerer | Constituion and Charisma |
Warlock | Wisdom and Charisma |
Wizard | Intelligence and Charisma |
Advantages can affect Saving Throws by providing additional bonus to the success rate and is usually gained by staying on the higher ground than your opponent or through the use of spells and special abilities.
On the other hand, Disadvantages negatively impact a save's chance to succeed and often occurs when you're positioned on the lower ground against your enemy.
What is Advantage and Disadvantage
Difficulty Class (DC) is basically the numerical check value that your Saving Throw must win against in order to resist or dodge the circumstances thrown at you. This tests your character's ability to overcome a Saving Throw challenge.
The more complex a save attempt is, the higher the value of the DC will be.
Death Saving Throws occur when a character's hitpoints reaches 0, in which they'll begin to roll a die each turn to stay alive. Each roll can either succeed or fail.
If a character manages to get three successful rolls, he/she will be stabilised and can be revived by a fellow party member using the ”Help Action”.
However, failing three times results in a full death and you will have to use a Scroll of Revivify to resurrect them instead.
