Baldurs Gate 3 BG3 - How to Respec

Talking to Withers can help you respec your character's ability score and change classes in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3). Read on to find out how to respec your characters, how to change class, and how to unlock Withers.

How to Respec

Unlock Withers

To respec your characters, you first need to unlock Withers which you can do by freeing him from his sarcophagus in the Dank Crypt. You can access this early in the game by exploring the Overgrown Ruins.

Once freed, Withers become a mainstay at your Camp, allowing you to respec at any time for a fee of 100 Gold.

If you skipped out on rescuing him, you can still get Withers to appear in your camp randomly by simply progressing your game. However, this will happen somewhere in the middle of the of Act 1. So if you want to respec early, make sure to rescue him first!

All Respec Features

Change Your Class

Wither's respec service allows you to change your character's class. After paying 100 Gold, you will be able to choose an entirely different class to play, allowing you to test out its features before ultimately deciding which one to use for your playthrough.

To change classes, simply select the class that you want to try on the screen, edit its ability scores, and hit confirm. Once changed, you will revert back to Level 1 with the new class you just picked.

Although reclassing resets you back to Level 1, you still get to keep your experience after the change. So if you were previously at Level 5, you will be able to level back up to Level 5 immediately.

All Classes and Subclasses

Change Subclass

To change your current subclass, simply keep the main class you currently have on the respec screen and click confirm. Level up after confirming and pick the subclass you want after.

For the Cleric, Paladin, Sorcerer, or Warlock Class, you can immediately pick a new subclass as soon as you enter on the respec screen. However, if you still end up wanting to change your subclass once more, you will have to pay Withers again to do so. Leveling up after exiting the respec screen will not allow you to change it.

Can Also Be Used for Multiclassing

Baldurs Gate 3 BG3 - Multiclassing

Since respecing resets you back to Level 1, you will also be able to change your character's secondary class after reaching Level 2. However, do note that multiclassing will be tricky and is generally not advised for new players to try as it can easily brick your characters.

Respec Ability Scores

Respec also allows you to reallocate the Ability Scores of your characters. Whether its playing a melee Cleric or a spellcasting-only Druid, the respec menu allows you to re-allocate points to make your attacks or spells stronger depending on the build you want to go for.

Origin Characters Can Also Change Class

Origin Characters can also change their Class by talking to Withers. If you want your companion to take on another role that you think fits them better, this is the only way to do it.

Note: However, despite the change of class, your companions (or playable Origin character) will still respond according to their original class. For example, Shadowheart will still have dialogue options for a Trickery Domain Cleric even if she respecs into something else.
