The main purpose of using a torch is to light up dark areas. If you do not have class features or spells that grant you the ability to see in the dark, you can use a torch instead.
You can also click on the Toggle Light Source to take out a torch from your inventory. This will help you instantly equip a torch without the need to access your inventory. You can find this button on your quick menu.
Throwing a torch on the ground will give you a small source of fire for dipping weapons. Dipping your weapons on torches can help you make fire weapons that you can use to gain elemental advantage during combat.
Keep in mind that the added fire will eventually wear off shortly after dipping, so make sure to use it quick if you're planning to use it for attacks.
You can also find a tracker that indicates the duration of the fire when selecting a melee action.
As a quarterstaff, you can actually use a torch as melee weapon. You can do this on the inventory screen by either dragging it to your weapon slots or right clicking on it and press equip.
Since torches are weapons by nature, you will need a free hand to wield it. This means that if you have characters using two-handed weapons, you will not be able to take out a torch during combat without wasting a turn.
Keep this in mind especially when exploring areas that requires you to have a light source like the Shadow Cursed Lands.
The easiest way to get a torch is to buy from traders for 19 Gold. If no torches are available for purchase, take a long rest to reroll the selection of items being offered.
How to use Short and Long Rest
Standing Torches that you can find in camps and settlements are not obtainable. The only torch you can bring around is the weapon version.
