How to Get to the Underdark

How to Get to the Underdark

Infiltrate the Defiled Temple

One way to get to the Underdark is to pass through the Defiled Temple. You can get there by passing through the Blighted Village, then the Goblin Camp, and entering the Shattered Sanctum. You can find the entrance to the Defiled Temple through Priestess Guts' room.

How to get to the Underdark in the Defiled Temple

  • Travel west of Druid's Grove and head to the Blighted Village. Talk your way inside or fight the Goblins.
  • Continue west and look for the Goblin Camp. You can also talk to them or fight them. It's better to avoid fighting at this point, as there are a lot of Goblins in the area.
  • Find the entrance to the Shattered Temple in the Goblin Camp. You can find it near an Ogre standing guard.
  • Once inside the Shattered Temple, talk to the guards and let them allow you to pass. Again, it's best to avoid fighting them, as they'll all come at your team.
  • Open the door and travel northwest to reach Priestess Guts' room. Lockpick the door or enter through the gap by jumping.
  • Lockpick another door inside Priestess Guts' room and proceed to the Defiled Temple.
  • Pass through the Ogre inside the Defiled Temple. This time, it's best to fight and kill the Ogre, as It won't be able to call in reinforcements, and you can attack it while all your party members inside.
  • Head downstairs until you reach a room with stone discs. Solve the puzzle by moving those, or activate the lever nearby to open the path to the Underdark.

Use the Hidden Mushroom Circle in the Overgrown Tunnel

There is an entrance to the Underdark in the Overgrown Tunnel, a dungeon located below Auntie Ethel's House.

Auntie Ethel's house is in Gnarled Teahouse/Riverside Teahouse, located at the Putrid Bog (initially visible as the Sunlit Wetlands), southwest of the Wilderness map. You will need to progress on her quest and confront her in the Teahouse to unlock the path to the Underdark.

How to Get to the Mushroom Circle

  • Encounter Auntie Ethel as you approach the Sunlit Wetlands.
  • Go to her house in the Riverside Teahouse (Gnarled Teahouse if you have already dispelled the illusion). Talk to her inside and finish the dialogue. Any options you pick will lead to her going back to her lair.
  • Follow her in the Overgrown Tunnel by putting out the fire on the Fireplace, then going down the stairs.
  • When you encounter the first Gnarled Door, pick up one of the Whispering Masks near the illusion door; you'll need it later. Then, approach the door (you don't need to continue the dialogue or pass the rolls when it talks to you) then walk through the door. This is an illusion door and you can go through it as if it was not there.
  • Continue deeper through the waterfall. Evade the fumes and traps, and keep going down until you reach the Ancient Abode, whre you'll find Mayrina in her cage.
  • You will enter a Boss Fight against Auntie Ethel as you get closer. Defeat her (kill her or make her go away), then go back to the area with the fumes.
  • Climb to the north, and you'll see another Gnarled Door. This time, make one of your characters wear the Whispering Mask, then have your whole party enter the door.
  • You'll see the Mushroom Circle in this room. Enter it to arrive at the Underdark.

You don't actually need to defeat Auntie Ethel, but the reason we recommend defeating Auntie Ethel first is to make sure she won't control your character once you wear the Whispering Mask.

Go through the Whispering Depths

There's a hidden passage in the Blighted Village where it will lead you to the Whispering Depths and into the Underdark. You will need to investigate the well near the teleport waypoint to get access to the area. However, you will encounter a boss-level monster inside before you can pass, a Phase Spider Matriarch.

Whispering Depths Map and Points of Interest

How to Get to the Whispering Depths

  • Go inside the Blighted Village. Talk to the Goblins to let them get you in, or straight up kill them.
  • Investigate the well in the middle of the village, near the teleport waypoint. Use the bucket rope to go down.
  • You are now in the Whispering Depths. Follow the path until you reach a huge hole emitting a green light. Defeat all the enemies you encounter along the way
  • A Phase Spider Matriarch is waiting and guarding the hole. You don't need to, but it's recommended to kill it and the other spiders to access the hole safely.
  • Jump down the hole after killing the Phase Spider Matriarch. Use Featherfall on your character to ensure that they won't take any fall damage. Watch out for the Minotaurs below in the Underdark!

Use Zhentarim Hideout Elevator

You can use the hidden elevator in Zhentarim Hideout to get to the Underdark. You can get there by going north of Waukeen's Rest and looking for their hideout. You will encounter tons of Skill Checks to get to the hideout safely. It is the best path for Rogues, as they have proficiencies over the Skill Checks that'll appear.

You can also fight your way through, but there will be a lot of enemies and traps in the area.

How to Get to Zhentarim Hideout Elevator

  • Head to Waukeen's Rest and enter the villa. Head northwest facing the main house, and enter the shed with boxes in front of it on the right.
  • You will encounter Salazon inside, panicking and preparing to attack. Talk your way out with a Dexterity Check (DC10) and Intimidation Check (DC15) to avoid blasting off and dying. Other dialogue choices will be available after the Dexterity Check, but it will depend on your character's class.
  • Salazon will give you the key to Zhentarim Hideout after stopping him. Use the key on the Wardrobe in the basement to get to the hideout.
  • Follow the path until you speak with Zarys. You can fight or talk to them and let them pass. It's best not to fight them if you're in a hurry, but you can fight and defeat them if you want to get some rare items, like the Abyss Beckoners.
  • Go northeast of the hideout and look for the rocks that doesn't blend well with the walls. Your characters will do a passive Investigation Check on the rocks, and they can pass through it if they succeed.
  • Lockpick the control to the elevator and ride it. You'll end up in the Underdark after that.
