S Tier Classes

Class Tier
BaldurBarbarian S Tier Icon
An Offense Focused Martial Class
The Barbarian is easily put into the S tier as a great Frontline DPS staple unit. They have the highest HP scaling (d12 hit die) which easily guarantees their strong survivability rate. As the Barbarian, not only do they gain high DPS output, they are also proficient in several two-handed weapons that posses AoE attack. As a strong melee unit that's capable of self buffing for stronger melee attacks, the Barbarian is easily one of the best martial class you can choose for your journey. You also easily scare everyone which is a nice plus.
BaldurBard S Tier Icon
A versatile unit that can buff and debuff
The most often memed character on D&D. You've most likely heard of campaign runs where a bard charms a dragon and has that dragon fight for him or he charms a devil and now journeys through hell and while these stories are often exaggerated, the Bard's core gameplay does revolve around these effects. The bard can inflict several debuffs to enemies using their spells or strengthening their own allies. The Bard offers a lot of utility so if you already have a balanced team, including a Bard is probably your best option. They possess the Jack of All Trades which means any ability checks you'll encounter easily starts in your favor regardless of the situation and their high Charisma and versatility means you can easily sway NPC dialogues to your favor.
BaldurCleric S Tier Icon
Definitely Not Just a Healer Class
Clerics should not and never be mistaken for a standard healer character in an RPG. Clerics are beasts that are capable of doing everything. They have enough proficiencies to become a martial focused class, spells and high armor class to become a high durability tanker, they have several damaging spells to become a long range caster, and they have buffs and heals to become a support unit. If you do not care about versatility, you can even respec all your characters into four clerics and just complete the game with all of them and you probably won't have too much troubles while doing it!
BaldurPaladin S Tier Icon
A Charismatic Hybrid Class
The Paladin is a frontline unit that's capable of using divine spells to inflict divine punishment on enemies or using buffs to make them impervious to attacks. Their damage scales with Strength but their spell casting modifier comes from Charisma and the several oaths that Paladins can take means there's several ways to play and build the Paladin.
BaldurFighter S Tier Icon
A Balanced DPS Unit
The Fighter is a great class to pick if you're looking for a much more balanced out DPS unit. They're capable of using Martial Skills to inflict damage to enemies similar to the Barbarian but they also have class actions like Second Wind to sustain themselves. They lessen their destructive output to maintain their defensive prowess up. They also have a Subclass choice that converts them into a Third Caster into the form of Eldritch Knight which can grant Misty Step, a strong mobility skill that can traverse the battlefield adn terrains much easier.
BaldurSorcerer S Tier Icon
A Strong Source of Spellcasting Damage
Sorcerers are your bonafide spellcasters. They are less versatile than Wizards but have a set focused class features that can provide bonuses to the Sorcerer's spells. They primarily scale with Charisma and if you're looking for a well rounded spellcaster that can deal an insane amount of damage while also being able to use several spells for navigating the world then Sorcerer is a highly recommended option!

A Tier Classes

Class Tier
BaldurRogue A Tier Icon.png
A Great Utility and Stealth Unit
What Rogues lack in terms of upfront damage compared to other Martial Classes are their insane utility both inside and outside combat. All locked doors and chests are mere playthings in the hand of a Rogue and you will never fear any traps again in your playthrough. Rogues also benefit from sneak attacks which makes opening up fights against enemies will often swing the tide in your favor immediately.
Class Tier
BaldurMonk A Tier Icon.png
A Consistent Martial Class With Consistent DPS
Monks are the lesser versatile martial classes. They have a lower amount of damage numbers than the rest of the S-Tier ranked martial classes and they also have fewer weapon proficiencies which makes their combat options limited. However, what they do lack in these department, they make up for with more consistent damage output. They are capable of using offhand barehanded attacks and this barehanded attack can be amplified by multiple class features from the Monk and its Subclasses. It also relies on Ki Points both for its martial skills and spell casting skills which allows the Monk to unleash strong bursts of damage if the need arise. This makes the Monk have a more consistent DPS than the other classes while also having the option to unleash stronger power against tougher enemies.
Class Tier
BaldurWizard A Tier Icon.png
A Spellcaster with a Library of Spells
The Wizard is an Intelligence based spell caster that has the biggest amount of spell pool among all spell casters. However, the number of spells the Wizard can actually use is only still limited on the amount of spells the Wizard can prepare. However, with the Wizard's spellbook, they can change their spells outside of combat to adjust to any given situation. Encountering a flame enemy? You can equip an ice or water spell to inflict more hurt to the enemy. Not only this but the Wizards can use Scrolls to permanently learn a Spell which makes the Wizard a difficult class but a very rewarding one when played by an experienced player.
Class Tier
BaldurWarlock A Tier Icon.png
A Spellcaster That Uses Pact Magic to Channel Dark Arts
Warlocks relies on using otherworldly magic to decimate their foes. They primarily rely on Charisma to power up their spells and unlock Pact and Boons while also borrowing power from Dark Patrons. Unlike most spellcasters, the Warlock will have a smaller amount of Spell Slots but at the same time, a Short Rest allows them to use their Spells again. This means that the Warlock will need to rely on their other Class Features to compensate for the lack of higher leveled spells at their disposal.

B Tier Classes

Class Tier
BaldurDruid B Tier Icon
A Nature Based Spellcaster that can Shapeshift
Druids are spellcasters that specializes on nature magic. They can channel the power of nature to entangle enemies with vines or pull enemies with summoned whips. They can also use Wild Shape to change their form to an animal of their choosing which can give them a completely different set of abilities upon use.
BaldurRanger B Tier Icon
A Mediocre Class But a Strong Multiclass Option
The Rangers doesn't really excel at anything. Other Martical Classes (and definitely the Rogue) can do a better job with using ranged attacks. Druid does what a Ranger does but better, and their Multiclass options feels like they're just a half of another class' full build. The Ranger can be multiclassed to several other classes and not only that, they even offer a lot of proficiencies just by Multiclassing into a Rogue such as the Ranger's Favoured enemy bonus from the Ranger Knight immediately providing proficiency in Heavy Armor. Starting as the Ranger is not recommended but if you want to look for a strong multiclass option then the Ranger is here to provide what your class needs.

Best Class to Pick

Pick Based on Ideal Roleplay Character

Baldur

All the classes in Baldur's Gate are great and shine in their own way. All the option you have are creative and in line with that classes' identity. Barbarians are dumb and angry so if you want to play a no brainer class that just loves to whack things then you'll probably enjoy the Barbarian more than let's say, a Wizard. But if you find fun in sneaking around everytime and only leaving once everyone's pockets are empty (or until you're caught) then a Rogue will definitely be up your alley.

Don't forget to consider that you will have up to 3 more party members to include at your main group so you can always offset what ever weakness your current team comp has! Maybe you're playing a Wizard and have included Astarion and Wyll to your party, consider adding Lae'zel to have a Fighter that stands on the Frontline to keep the harm away!

Tier List Criteria

For Game8's class tier list of Baldur's Gate 3, we considered the following criteria when picking the best classes that players can use, in-game:

  • Damage or Support Utility: Pertains to how consistent the damage or support utility of a class is during battle. Classes that can deal massive amounts of damage or offer the most utility inside and outside of combat will place higher on the list.
  • Role Versatility: Pertains to how flexible a class is when meeting the different needs of the party. The easier it is for a class to adapt to a different role or offer different builds at higher levels, the better it places on the tier list.
  • Ease-of-Use: Pertains to how easy it is for new players to use the class. A class with easy-to-learn mechanics and features will place higher on the tier list than a class with complicated features.
