Big Man is the fourth boss of Hero Mode, and his fight is unlocked by unlocking the Stage The Obscure Chiaroscurist, which is found in the site Happiness Research Lab. After entering the stage and watching a series of cutscenes, the fight with Big Man will begin.
How to Beat Big Man |
---|
1. Big Man's shadow will move across the stage, leaving a trail of ink. Shoot his shadow to break it into smaller copies. Note that these copies will combine again if left alone for too long. |
2. The more you shoot Big Man's shadows, the more copies it will split into. The copies will move faster as they get smaller as well. One copy will start using weapon-based attacks to damage you. Focus on shooting this copy when you see it. |
3. Shooting the right shadow enough times will reveal Big Man, stunning him in the process and allowing you to attack him. Repeat this process three times to win the fight. |
Big Man's Attacks |
Big Man's shadows will sometimes throw Splat Bombs at you. Move away quickly before they explode. |
Another attack that he will use involves an ink cannon that can shoot you from a distance, or attack you directly by honing on your location. You can shoot this weapon as soon as you see it to disable it. |
Big Man's shadows will occasionally explode, inflicting damage and inking the general area. Be sure to move away when you see the attack animation. |
If you are far away from Big Man's shadows, he will sometimes charge up and rush you to inflict damage. This attack has a very obvious starting animation, so it is easily avoided. |
Big Man's shadows will constantly ink the stage as they move around, making it rather pointless to try to ink the entire stage. Instead, make sure the area where you are currently standing has enough ink for you to recover ink levels and avoid Big Man's attacks.
After inking Big Man twice, the four platforms found in the stage will be raised. You can use these platforms both as a vantage point and as a means to create a small patch of ink for defense and movement.
Getting rid of all of Big Man's copies is a surefire way to find his true form, but can waste time and ink in the process. As such, we recommend searching for the shadow that is using weapon-based attacks, as this shadow will always be Big Man's true form. Employing this strategy will allow you to end the fight much more quickly.
Since Big Man's copies ink the stage as they move, trying to attack the copies while creating a safe space for movement will cause your ink levels to deplete rapidly. If you find this process too difficult, focus more so on inking the area near you instead of just simply attacking Big Man's shadows. Inking the stage will inevitably cause you to attack Big Man's shadows while providing the ability to quickly swim away from his attacks.
Big Man can be fought again at any time by re-entering the stage The Obscure Chiaroscurist. The character dialogue in the cutscenes will be slightly different, though they can be skipped by pressing the - button if you want.

Big Man is a huge gray manta ray who only knows one word - “Ay!”. Don't worry though because there is a translation for everything he is saying so it's all good!
Just like Frye and Big Man, Big Man performs and creates music. Such is the life of an idol!
