No, You Can Use Your Map to Plan Your Own Route Instead

V.A.N.S. is a perk that lets you see a trail leading to your quest objective. With all honesty, the V.A.N.S. perk is quite worthless since you can use your map to plan out your own route. The trail also only reveals a generic path to your next target and does not reveal any shortcuts, such as jumping over ledges or obstacles, so it doesn't really show you the quickest route.

How to Get V.A.N.S.

Unlock V.A.N.S. at Intelligence 1

V.A.N.S. is on Intelligence Level 1

The V.A.N.S. perk is unlocked when your Intelligence is at Level 1. You can start at this level by assigning 1 point to Intelligence during the Registration Form at the start of the game. Otherwise, you can get to this level by collecting SPECIAL magazines or bobbleheads and spending perk points upon level up.

After getting to Intelligence 1, you're free to spend perk points on ranking up the skill, as long as you are at the required character level to rank up.
