By joining the Minutemen, you gain access to the Sanctuary settlement, which happens to be in your hometown. From here, you can do plenty of things, from growing crops to sleeping to pass time, and even crafting weapons.
You can also get the Flare Gun after completing the First Step, which is the first radiant quest you'll receive from the Minutemen. The Flare Gun is more of a tool than a weapon, as it shoots a smoke signal to gather nearby Minutemen to help you in combat.
After completing Taking Independence, you'll receive the Castle as one of your rewards. It functions as a settlement, but also as the main headquarters of the Minutemen.
Taking Independence Walkthrough
Along with the Castle, you'll also unlock Radio Freedom, which allows you to gain access to a couple more quests for the Minutemen.
Once you complete Old Guns, you'll also receive the schematics for the Artillery Piece, a special defense tool that fires missiles at designated areas. You can build this in all the settlements you establish.
For completing The Nuclear Option, Sturges will also give you the Short Automatic Laser Musket. You can get it by simply visiting him again after the quest.
The Nuclear Option (Minutemen) Walkthrough
To join the Minutemen, make your way to the Museum of Freedom in Concord and start the When Freedom Calls quest. Upon completing this quest, speak with Preston Garvey to officially join the Minutemen.
The Minutemen will initially establish a settlement in Sanctuary. Through the quest of the same name, you'll develop a functional settlement here by crafting beds, defenses, and providing food and water to the settlers.
After a while, the Minutemen will then settle in the Castle. This will be their permanent headquarters throughout the game. You can access The Castle as soon as you start the Taking Independence quest.
Upon joining the Minutemen, Preston Garvey will name you as the general of the faction, and together, you'll rebuild the entire faction from the ground up.
Preston Garvey is the main companion you'll unlock when you join this faction. He'll accompany you as soon as you join the Minutemen at the end of the When Freedom Calls main quest and officially becomes a companion after The First Step.
Ronnie Shaw rejoins the Minutemen after reclaiming the Castle. She is a veteran who served the Minutemen in the past. With Radio Freedom, she decides to rejoin and helps you unlock the Castle's armory during the Old Guns faction quest.
