Only Worth It to Buff Damage for Early Game Guns

Gun Nut is a useful perk to have to modify and increase the damage of your guns in early game, since the guns in the beginning stages of Fallout 4 aren't nearly as powerful as those that you will find later on. Generally speaking, you'll want to rank this perk up to Rank 1 or 2 only, as you will find unique weapons later on to replace these weapons.

How to Get Gun Nut

Unlock Gun Nut at Intelligence 3

Gun Nut is on Intelligence Level 3

The Gun Nut perk is unlocked when your Intelligence is at Level 3. You can start at this level by assigning 3 points to Intelligence during the Registration Form at the start of the game. Otherwise, you can get to this level by collecting SPECIAL magazines or bobbleheads and spending perk points upon level up.

After getting to Intelligence 3, you're free to spend perk points on ranking up the skill, as long as you are at the required character level to rank up.
