Tradecraft Walkthrough
Tradecraft Objectives

Meet Deacon at the Old Highway
Go to the Old Highway and meet Deacon, who will be disguised as a Wastelander in the ruins of the highway.
Find the Tourist
Head to the actual highway by climbing the fallen bus. You can go ahead and clear all the ghouls along the way, but make sure to walk with Deacon afterward, as Ricky Dalton won't speak to you unless he's around.
Talk to Deacon
Next, talk to Deacon and he'll give you two options to proceed. You can either head to Slocum Joe's entrance by choosing the frontal assault option, or approach stealthily from the rear end using the escape tunnel.
Enter the Escape Tunnel
Follow the indicator on the map to find the escape tunnel. It will be a large pipe with overgrown moss covering the entrance. You don't need to do anything as you can just zoom past the moss to enter.
Make Deacon Unlock the Security Door
Once inside, talk to Deacon, and he'll help you unlock the security door. If you have high Hacker perks, you can just do it yourself. Otherwise, simply wait for Deacon to do it after talking to him.
Head to the Department X R&D
Explore the tunnel further and continue moving down until you reach a locked door. The path downwards is linear but filled with Synths that you can either sneak around or attack.
At the end, you'll find a locked security door that needs hacking. Deacon won't help you this time. You'll need to handle the hacking yourself.

Climb the Stairs Up to the Depertment X
Once you gain access to the room behind the door, take the stairs directly in front of you. From there, you'll find directional signs toward the Department X R&D that you can simply follow to find Dr. Carrington's prototype.
Wait for Deacon to Use the Inaccessible Terminal
Upon reaching the department, you'll come across another inaccessible terminal that you'll need to unlock to progress. The only way to open this is to let Deacon unlock it using the terminal.
Make sure to clear his path towards the department. Otherwise, he'll be fending off any Synths you might've missed, taking more time before you can proceed.
Take Carrington's Prototype
After Deacon gains full control of the inaccessible terminal, the main door will open, and he'll immediately examine the body of Tommy Whispers. While he examines it, you can pick up Carrington's Prototype, which you can find on the shelf to the right.
Once Deacon finishes investigating the body, talk to him again to receive the Deliverer.
Deliverer Pistol Location, ID, and Ammo
Return to the Railroad HQ
Finally, complete the quest by heading back to the Railroad HQ, where Desdemona commends you for your efforts and officially invites you to join the Railroad. Deacon will now also join you as a companion after this quest!
