Defend the Castle Objectives

Talk to Preston Garvey
After completing Form Ranks, Preston Garvey will inform you that the Castle is in danger and ask you to follow him there. However, you don't have to do that, as you can quickly fast travel to the Castle instead.
Preston Garvey Likes and Affinity Guide
Talk to Ronnie Shaw
Upon your arrival at the Castle, speak to Ronnie Shaw immediately. She'll inform you about the situation and ask you to improve the Castle's defenses before the attack.
Build Defenses
Quickly open the workshop and begin improving your base by building as many defenses as possible. Since you'll be facing enemies in hordes, it's best to set up numerous traps and turrets around the Castle to enhance your offensive capabilities.
Note: The battle can start any time, and the objective will be marked complete even if you haven't reached the required 100% defenses.
Construct Defenses by the Entrances
You can also block all entrances to prevent enemies from entering and keep them outside of the Castle. This will lessen the pressure, as they tend to spread out everywhere once they make it inside. Some will even attempt to breach the bastions, so be careful!
Defend the Castle from the Institute
Once the Institute arrives, they will start attacking everyone within the Castle. Expect a variety of Synths and numerous Coursers, all coming in hordes.
A good strategy to eliminate them is to use explosives for dealing damage. The Artillery Pieces you installed during the Old Guns faction quest will also come in handy, so be sure to stock up on Smoke Grenades to effectively utilize the missile launchers.
Report to Ronnie Shaw
After reaching 100% completion, Ronnie Shaw will start a small speech, and speak to her while she delivers it while waiting for Preston Garvey to resume his post.

Complete the mission by speaking to Preston Garvey, where you both will discuss retaliating against the Institute as you receive the next faction quest: The Nuclear Option.
