The Railway Rifle is an exclusive rifle given to you by Desdemona after completing the Underground Undercover faction quest. You can use it immediately as you defend the Railroad from the Brotherhood of Steel during the Precipice of War faction quest.
Ballistic Weave is a mod that allows you to upgrade your clothing to improve defense. You can unlock this by completing a few Railroad quests, specifically after the quest Jackpot.
The Railway Rifle Mod is weapon mod that allows you to increase the range of your rifles, improve accuracy, and reduce recoil. You can obtain this mod after completing the Rocket's Red Glare quest.
You can join the Railroad in the Old North Church in The North End district. Make sure to have the Road to Freedom faction quest active so you can progress it as you navigate the church.
There are multiple ways to get the Road to Freedom faction quest. You can get it as early as Act 1 when you reach Diamond City and Goodneighbor by talking to Piper and other survivors, or by playing the Join the Railroad Holotape, which you can find in several locations such as Hotel Rexford or at KL-E-0's store.
You'll also be forced to do this quest in Act 2, where Dr. Amari advises you to consult the Railroad to analyze the Courser Chip in The Molecular Level. This method locks you out of the entire faction if you don't ask them for help to build the Signal Interceptor.
As you progress through Road to Freedom, you'll gain access to the Railroad HQ. You can come here anytime to do more of their quests.
Desdemona is the leader of the Railroad HQ. You'll first encounter her during Road to Freedom, where she interrogates you upon discovering their base.
Deacon is the unlockable companion if you join the Railroad. You can get him as early as when you complete Tradecraft faction quest.
