Here There Be Monsters Objectives

Talk to Donny Kowalski

To begin the Here There Be Monsters quest, speak to Donny Kowalski on the docks behind the Shamrock Taphouse. This is located south of Boston Airport.

Enter the Yangtze

Swim towards the periscope sticking out of the water. Approach the hatch and enter the submarine called the Yangtze.

Speak to Captain Zao

Talk to Captain Zao in the main control room. He will ask you to retrieve a new dampening coil in order to fix his submarine.

Persuade Him for Better Rewards

At this point, you can attempt to persuade Captain Zao in three different Charisma checks, with each providing separate rewards that you'll get at the end of the quest.

If you pass the first one, he'll offer Pre-War Money, the second one gives you additional 200 caps, and the third one rewards you with the unique Zao Sword Melee weapon.

Go to the Blast Furnace at Saugus Ironworks

Next, you need to go the Blast Furnace area of the Saugus Ironworks where the Dampening Coil can be found.

Enter the ironworks and defeat the Forged enemies as you make your way across the room. Then, go up the stairs to the top floor and follow the catwalk until you reach the entrance of the Blast Furnace.

Defeat Slag to Get the Dampening Coil

Once in the Blast Furnace, you will be greeted by Slag and his henchmen. Defeat all of them and then grab the Dampening Coil at the corner of the room.

Don't forget to grab the Shishkebab unique weapon from Slag's body.

Obtain the Warhead

Return to Captain Zao and follow him to the lower levels of the ship. Open the bulkhead door using the terminal and fight your way through hordes of Zao's ghoul crewmen until you reach the room where the Warhead is located. Interact with the ICBM and grab the Warhead inside.

Beside the Warhead is Zao's First Mate. He is a bit tougher to deal with than the other crew members, so use your best weapons to kill him.

Install the Dampening Coil and Warhead

Present the Dampening Coil and Warhead to Captain Zao, then proceed to the Reactor Core just outside the room to start installing both of them.

Make sure to install the Dampening Coil first. If you place the Warhead first, the submarine will explode and you will get killed.

Talk to Captain Zao

Once both parts are installed successfully, speak to Captain Zao to receive Homing Beacons as your reward. If you persuaded him for more rewards earlier in the quest, you will get x4 Pre-War Money, 200 Caps, and Zao's Sword.
