Scavenging Stations are worth it to provide jobs for settlers, since they are cheap to build. Unemployment can prevent new settlers from joining a settlement so be sure to have jobs ready for settlers to continue growing the settlement.

Passively Generate Junk Items

Fallout 4 - Generate Scrap

Scavenging Stations can be a good method for farming junk items without you having to actively look for them. Each settler assigned to a scavenging station will collect two random junk items per day stored in the Workshop inventory. This adds up to a lot after a while.

Limit to Junk Items Collected

Be aware that there is a limit to how much junk items that can be collected and stored by settlers which is (100 + 5 × Settlement Population). Make sure to collect the junk items regularly and store them in separate containers.
